On the weekend, an opponent of mine seemed to mention charging could only be done in a straight line.
Now i was, and could, but is this a necessity? i've had a look and can't find anything to say that i can't charge in a bent line in the BGB, as far as it seems to me, a charge is just movement that takes you into combat, so it doesn't matter if it is a straight line or not
Dear Game Developer,Caps-Lock, its like cruise-control for AWESOMENESS!
Rock is cheese, Paper is just fine
WWP and other Dark Eldar how to
this isn't fantasy you have a charge move of 6 inches (mostly) and you are free to move in any which way that model is allowed when charing (you could do loop-de-loops if you really wanted to)
that sed however you still have to move closest to closest which usally means a straight line
"take my love, take my land, take me to where i cannot stand, i don't care i'm still free you can't take the sky from meee" ;- firefly
"i'm gonna grant you your greatest wish i'm gonna show you a world without sin" ;- serentiy
"I am a leaf on the wind, watch how i soar" ;- serenity
In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.
That's correct, because on P.37 BGB line 6 of Paragraph 2 it states that that is the starting point for the combat. It then says that all the other models may move up to their permitted Assault Move distance (para.2) and that they can be moved in any sequence (para.3).
"Tau Commandment #226: Participants who use Velocity Trackers in the Tau Clay Pigeon Tournament will be disqualified"
Remember, there is a difference between "shortest possible path" and "straight line"
the BGB says you have to assault using the shortest possible path (or similar wording). This means that you CANNOT move around terrain to avoid taking a difficult terrain test.
However, if the shortest possible path is NOT in a straight line, like around a corner, then you're still good. (There is nothing in the book which says you need LOS to declare a charge)
So normally, yes, you have to assault in a strait line. If this is impossible, becuase of blocking terrain, you can move around it.
As has been hashed out, yes, you can charge in non straight line movement.
BUT, there has been a bunch of other gobbledeegoock posted too. Checking the bgb under charge movements, there are several rules that most be followed. Namely, that you must move in such a manner as to stay in coherency, get into base to base with unengaged models if poss, or btb with engaged if no unengaged models are available, or to within 2" of an engaged friendly model barring all that.
So, if you had:you couldn't end up with :Code:X X O X X X X X O O X X X O O OCode:XXX XXXXO xXX O O OOO
