Assault Weapons in Rapid Fire Squads

I was skimming through the shooting section of the rulebook and i realised that it didnt clarify (or i just couldnt find this rule in writing, mabye others have) if a squad containing assault weapons and rapid fire weapons can fire the assault weapons and not the rapid fire weapons than charge in the assault phase..

    for example:

a squad of 10 shoota boyz (equipped with rapid fire weapons) and 3 w/ big shoota's (assault weapons)want to assault a squad of marines in the assault phase. However they want to shoot them first. So can the ork player declare that only the 3 Big shoota's are gonna fire, therefore allowing them to charge in the assault phase. Or does the whole squad have to fire as one, thereby forcing them to make rapid fire shots and not allow them to charge?

Sorry if this is at all unclear.

    Armies:

    Warhammer Fantasy Battle -
    Strigoi Vampire Counts 2000 Points
    Goblins 500 Points

    Warhammer 40 000 -
    Dark Eldar 2000 Points
    Space Orks 1000 Points
    Imperial Guard (In Progress)

Yes, limiting to only those three models shooting is perfectly legal. P.18 BGB last sentence of the first paragraph has it in black and white for you!

Just make sure to declare that only those models are firing. Some people will try and do the, these models shoot-then see how many casaulties are done, then roll the next weapon type, until they kill just enough. In short, all shooting from 1 squad is considered simultaneous (except for blasts and templetes).

But yeah, just remember that you must fire all the shots from A GUN (except RF), but you don't have to shoot ALL GUNS.
    My armies:
16,000+ of Eldar (only need flyers)
    7,000+ of Nids (want heirophant)
6,000+ of Space Marines (need rever titan)
4,400+ of Cygnar (all models for the faction)
    1,500+ of Legion (just started)

Very good point to make about "weapons firing" declaration, tarzen.

All shooting is simultaneous indeed, and the BGB (P.22 under "Rolling Dice to Hit") suggests that all To Hit dice are rolled together. Unfortunately, the same paragraph includes the sentence "Alternatively, you can simply make separate dice rolls for different weapons or shooters", which emphasises the need for specifying which weapons you plan to fire and those which you plan not to fire before any shooting happens. Some folks might just try that "trick" you mentioned about "waiting to see what happens".

That is one of my pet peeves." Lets see what the flamer does before I decide to shoot the rapid-fire weapons."

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
