I'm assuming you really mean difficult terrain and not dangerous terrain, those two terms are different ;o

    1. Are you allowed to shoot into difficult terrain?
Difficult terrain is basically cover once you're in it. Read page 25 in the rulebook for cover saves explanation. Also if playing area terrain, you need to read on the rules for that, on page 21.

    2. Are you allowed to stay in difficult terrain with no side effect?
For infantry it should be fine since you only have difficult terrain rolls when moving through it. Page 17 has more details on Dangerous terrain effects, which is where you have to do a roll to see if you die from going into it (like a marine walking into acid pools for example). Dangerous terrain also affects other units if you do certain things. IIRC, jump pack units and bikes have to take if you fulfill some conditions.

    3. When shooting do you do it by the guns tip?
Personally, I normally do so, as it makes more sense. Can a more accomplished rules person answer this? I can imagine the confusion (and potential abuse!) when you have a gun 3 inches long on a small infantry unit.

Shooting-wise, you use the model's base. The only time you use the gun is when firing from a VEHICLE IIRC, and you measure from each weapon independently ... so heavy bolter sponsons are further away usually than say a lascannon turret.

The reason they do it from base of model is generally b/c if you could measure from the gun, you'd see things like tons of infantry carrying ''extra long'' guns ... "oh this space marines chapter uses extended bolters, they function the same and look similar but have super long barrels ... they effectively have 26" range yay!"

    Hi,
    1. Difficult terrain is difficult only for purposes of moving not shooting (page 17 BG. It does not necessarily give cover although it can do if modelled that way.
    2. Same as before, being motionless is not moving and it attracts no penalties.
    3. Use the models base for measuring distances not how it is modeled (page 8 BG but as mentioned before anything without a base (like a vehicle) has the distance measured from the gun muzzle tip and line of sight from the weapons mounting (although at the moment I can’t find the page reference for this.)

    Cheers

P,S, Got it now, it's from the "40k_rulebook_faq.pdf."
