sorry for another line of sight question... but this one came up (just this wed) in a small skirmish against some DH..
a squad of my marines were behind cover, with one (unfortunate) marine right out in the open. the one out in the open had LOS to a dreadnought AND to some storm troopers, but the dreadnought was closer. HOWEVER, the rest of the squad has LOS to the stormtroopers only.
i suggested that since the bulk of my squad could see the troopers, eventhough the dread was closer to one of them.. that they would fire on the stormtroopers - i know this rule was in 2nd edition.. but i could find anything like that in the BBB - in fact... it has like 2 pages on LOS.. with most being pictures anyway!
well we couldnt settle it and left it to a dice roll, and i wanted to ask you guys for help!
so can a squad choose to fire at the target that it sees the most? [someone tell me yes]
(and if anyone has some good anecdotes about marines vs dh feel free to post those too -- AFTER answering my question tho haha !
I would say that you would choose: fire with the one marine at the dread, or the rest of the marines at the squad. vehicles block LOS, but if most of the squad can only see the troops, game on. now, the ones that have a dread in the way shouldn't be able to fire at all.
According to the rules, your squad may shoot at ANY target it sees. You decide which one to fire at at the time of shooting. It does NOT have to be the closest squad, as per 2nd ed.
Presumably you would pick one in range, but you are allowed to shoot at any you see, if it turns out to be out of range you just wasted your shots. You CAN shoot at a unit the might only be in range of one of your squad's weapons, the rest of the shots are wasted, such as a bolter squad with a missile launcher.
Unfortunately you cannot split fire a squad (unless you have special rules). The entire squad must shoot at the same target.
If only a prtion of the squad can see the target, that portion may shoot at the target, the rest stay in cover (or whatever they're doing). In your case one guy could have shot at the dread and the rest shoot at nothing, OR they all shoot at the storm troopers.
Wow thank you WolfRaider - that's exactly the answer i was looking for.... [and i was even going to ask about split-fire too!]
thanks i can't wait to play with these 'new' rules!
Sorry, just a quick shot here. Can you still split targets with heavy weapons. I may be out of the loop (back somewhere in the 2nd edition), but can say a marine with a missile launcher target a Hammerhead while the rest of the squad targets a group of firewarriors?
Reread Wolf's post.
