If you shoot at a unit, then you only have the choice of assaulting that unit in the assault phase.
So what happens if you wiped out the enemy unit in the shooting phase, and there is another enemy unit within assaulting range?
Can you elect to assault it, as the unit target for shooting no longer exists?

That said (and all the above is true), you can certainly multiple assault so long as you can make it into close combat with at least one model from the unit you shot at. So kill most of unit A, and assault A&B. But if you wipe all of A out, you have no option to assault.
16,000+ of Eldar (only need flyers)
7,000+ of Nids (want heirophant)
6,000+ of Space Marines (need rever titan)
4,400+ of Cygnar (all models for the faction)
1,500+ of Legion (just started)
This can be found on page 36 in the BGB under the heading of “Shooting and Assaulting.”
In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.
so remember all of the above comments next time you aproach charge range. If you shoot and kill too many, you might be stuck out in the firelane without the relative "safety" of CC. When I run large crusader squads all tooled up with Bp/CCW I find that I rarely shoot with the pistols. Trial and error taught me a hard lesson, 20 guys with above average BS shooting even a meager str 4 can whipe out the assault area with ease, leaving me with a failed assault attempt, and all this CC fury wasted impotently.
Armies thus far....
Or you can decide which models in your assaulting unit are *not* going to fire their weapons, thus allowing you a modicum of firepower which will whittle down the unit you intend to assault without reducing it too much. However, another element you would have to consider here too is that should you wipe out the squad in the ensuing Assault Phase, thus gaining a Massacre! move, are there other enemy units nearby which you can reach and lock in combat, thus protecting your assaulting unit from retributionary fire?
Oh the joys of this game!!
