    Tau AFP help :0

    G'day dudes,

Ok, all guess range weapons fire indirectly right? Thus meaning that they scatter?
I just want to check that the indirect fire capability and the roll to scatter is also applicable to the Tau commanders airbursting fragmentation projector? As the rules are a little confusing.

    Cheers.

Here's what you do (I'm pretty sure).
Choose a unit to shoot at.
Place the blast over a member of the squad (they must be in range [18"] or the shot auto-fails).
Scatter D6." Anything under the blast is a hit or partial. Resolve casualties as normal.

No, no, no. Guess Range just means that no LoS is necessary. The AFP is not Ordinance, so it does not scatter. Roll to hit as normal.

Barrage (or 'guess') weapons have a 'G' next to the range on their profile and follow the Barrage rules given in the shooting section of their rule book.

Some weapons, such as some Tau equipment, simply don't require a line of sight to the target. If there's no G next to the range, you roll to hit like any other weapon, you just don't have to check LOS.

I think the point of contention is that the weapon profile does not say "Barrage".

Exactly the problem I have, It says guess range weapon, thus one would think to follow the rules similar to a mortar, roll for scatter and so forth. However it doesn't say 'barrage' thus one is left to be confused. One would think it'd be too good to be a no scatter weapon?

Nope, because Guess range weapons don't roll to hit using the normal BS. Not being ordinance has nothing to do with it - it's like claiming the sub-munitions blast should scatter or count as ordinance because it uses the big template.
Guess range weapons means that the weapon in question can fire indirectly - it doesn't require line of sight - however the draw back to this is that the shot has a likelyhood of scattering and ignores the usual to hit roll (that is to say it doesn't use the BS of the model).
When firing at a target that is within line of sight (i.e. direct firing) then roll the Scatter dice and a single D6 to determine the distance and direction that the shot deviates. When firing at a target that is out of line of sight (i.e. indirect firing) then roll the Scatter dice and two D6, picking the highest, to determine where the shot lands (please note that if a Hit is rolled on the scatter dice then the shot lands on target despite the number rolled on the D6)

Edit: Besides, isnt the AFP a 'one off' unique weapon that only fires one shot. A Barrage weapon is just that, something that either fires multiple shots (such as the tempest launcher) or can be used in a unit (such as mortars) or is an ordinance barrage (which is different, due to the size of the blast). Regardless, Guess range weapons follow the targetting procedure for Barrage weapons - without the pinning test.

All guess weapons are barrage weapons. P. 28, under 'Maximum Range'.
