Ok here is a simple question. Say I buy a Razorback for my Dev Squad (Since they are usually smaller in size) Do they have to start the game inside of it? I could see setting them up near each other but not having to ride inside it.
No, they can just set up next to it. They do not have to be inside at all.
Nope, but they have to start next to it. DE players sometimes do this: stand outside of the raider in case it gets shot down the first turn. I always start with my Thousand Sons in the rhinos so my opponent doesn't get to see where my lord or possessed are.
They have to deploy at the same time (rulebook clarifications), but transport vehicles are generally not subject to the coherency rules, so they can deploy somewhere else.
They don't have to start anywhere near it. They can be set up in any legal location, as long as they are set up at the same time.Originally posted by Donny B@Apr 5 2004, 08:20

Your opponent could just watch where you deploy your Lord during the deployment of HQs, since they deploy separately from troops or elites. Barring that, he could just ask you where each unit is. There is no such thing as a hidden unit except for certain units with special abilities.
true, but if someone wanted to know what was in which rhino (i.e. not paying attention, or what my HQ consists of), I don't have to tell him. I'm not trying to be a prick, but I am being realistic. His soldiers, if they were real, would only see a rhino/razorback/land raider. They couldn't ask what enemies are inside of it. Therefore, my friends and I don't even mention what is in each one. The surprise helps with the fun of the battle!!
I suggest marking the transports, say, by numbers on the bottom. Then make a list of which units go into which transports. Thus, if the opponent wants to verify after the game that everything went as was supposed, he can do so.
This to make sure that the über-CC squad just doesn't "happen" to be in that last mobile Rhino, which just reached cover very near the enemy.
"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
You will find that it is expected game etiquette to tell your opponent what units are where, explain any abilities they have when asked, and also tell them what units are in which transport. It's also the reason for WYSIWYG, make sure your opponent recognizes each unit. Granted there are no rules that say you must tell your opponent what’s in a transport, but don’t be surprised if your opponent walks away from the table if you tell them your not revealing what’s in one of your transports. Just pretend 40k has sufficiently advanced technology to scan the contents of any transport and only units with special abilities can hide; lectors, mandrakes, and such.
Every tournament I have attended, the opponents traded army lists before the battle and fully identified every unit. I even had one opponent who gave me a simulated parchment document with a complete history of his unit, tactics they were know to use, and all the fluff associated with his unit. I would never not tell an opponent what is in a transport. Its just good sportsmanship. Remember, Warhammer is not a simulation of battle any more than chess. Its a game of pieces like chess, it just has a more ‘army-like’ recreation for the pieces.
Ok, thanks for all of the quick responses. The issue of which unit in which transport will not be a problem as my each of my rhinos will have different equipment and my list willl show which one holds my HQ and which will not be holding my Devistators.
