Question arising from last nights game....
If a Broodlord starts with 10 Genestealers as his retinue, how do you calculate 50% unit strength? Does the BL count as a model in the unit strength calculation or not? Keep in mind the Broodlord can not every leave the retinue and he must be fielded with them.
For Example: Broodlord is left at the end of the game with 5 Genestealers. Is the unit at exactly 50% (5 / 10 genestealers) or is it technically above because the BL is counted ( 6 / 11) ?
In my mind I would think the Broodlord would count towards the starting unit strength of the unit simply because him and his retinue are deployed together and act as a single unit throughout the entire game. This differs from an alone Independent Character who joins a unit and is able to leave the unit.
Example: A Necron Lord has joined a Warrior squad of 11. At the end of the game 5/11 Warriors are alive. Even though the Lord is in the unit, he does not add to the "strength" of the unit. Therefore, 5/11 is below 50%.
Thanks for the help!
Is this question arising out of "How to determine Victory Points"? See P.86 BGB under "Units with Distinct elements" , as this will help you a lot.
"Tau Commandment #226: Participants who use Velocity Trackers in the Tau Clay Pigeon Tournament will be disqualified"
Both people have very valid points and are right for their respective reasons.
Unit strength for wounds puroposes (namely outnumbered in CC) is determined by total number of wounds in a unit (ignoring allocated wounds). So, a unit of 5 marines with a 3 wound chappy that has himself sustained 1 wound, counts as a 8 wound unit for the rules of outnumbering.
The same unit would count as a 5 man unit for scoring puropses, since IC's are NEVER scoring except in special missions. So if the unit started out at 10 members, they are now at 50%, still not BELOW the 50% that would make them non-scoring.
Further, as far as morale checks from shooting are concerned, it's based on casualties. So if you inflict on e kill on a unit of 5 with a sniper, they suffer a pin test. If you inflict one wound on a 2 model unit with 4 wounds, they do not test since you have not caused a casualty with pining.
Hope that answers a few things that could have gone off in tangents.
