Ok this is probably a real simple question but I just thought I would ask on here as I my 40k rulebook is missing, and has been for sometime...

Right I know that if I win a combat and the enemy falls back I can choose to either consolidate or chase after them (depending on various special rules) the sweeping advance can take you passed the fleeing squad and into assault with another squad, however my question is this:

if I wipe out the opposing squad in close combat can I still opt to advance and hopefully get into combat with another enemy squad or is my only option to consolidate in those situations?

I thought that after you wiped out an opponent in close combat there was a choice to consolidate (get in some cover and avoid the incoming fire) or advance towards the nearest squad but my friend is very opposed to the idea and says that if the unit is wiped out then you cant chase after the fleeing squad and therefore cant advance.

We've been playing by this rule for a while now but after reading a few battle reports it seems like you can still advance if the opponent is wiped out in cc... is this true?

Thanks!

I think you are confusing a few issues here.

"Wiping out" a squad in combat means you killed them all on the first turn you charged into combat. If people are running away that means that you didn't "wipe out" them. You can try to catch them or consolidate like normal if there is no one else left in the combat.

If you can consolidate into the next squad then you just started a new combat only you get no bonus for charging and the attacks don't happen until the next assault phase.

If you do "wipe out" a squad you can move into the next squad or make a move toward them, but I forget how far it is. It might be 6" and it might be d6" but I don't remember.

oops, sorry about being a bit confusing heres a situation:

A squad of hormagaunts has just assault a squad of fire warriors and the firewarior squad has been slain before they can even strike back, just outside of consolidation range a combat between some kroot and a dwindling squad of termagaunts is raging, can the hormagaunts get the 6", or d6" or assault range move towards the kroot vs termagaunt combat? or do the hormagaunts have to consolidate and most likely take a hail of fire?

or

A marine assault squad has just finished off a squad of necron warriors, there is no cover to consolidate into so the unit decides to press on closer towards the necron lines, is it possible to use the 6" move (or however far) or would the marines have to consolidate forward 3"?

The whole thing is clearly stated in the rulebook, page 67, "3. Determine Assault Results", righ-hand column, "Enemy Destroyed!".
"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
