so I have a demons of Chaos WFB army. Since WFB bases are technically larger than round bases used in 40k, does the rule about being able to use any base that is larger than the on provided apply.
That rule is actually gone from 5th Ed. However, I can't imagine anybody having a problem with a 25mm square instead of a 25mm circle.
The only problem that I can see is rotation and in a skirmish based game it could lead to players gaining or loosing distance between bases by choosing whether or not to rotate.
But Cavalry have been getting along just fine like this for years so in a pure technical sense I personally wouldn’t use square bases but in a game just being aware of it and not abusing it should see you through OK.
In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.
The rulebook on page 3 says to play the models with the supplied bases, but in this special case the Daemons are actually supplied with both so... there's no problem to use the square bases in 40k. :) Just be mindful that the extra plastic in the corners of the square base compared to the round base might means that some hits will reach you that wouldn't if you were using round bases, or that blasts/templates might catch a few more models but besides that... for daemons, yeah you don't even need your opponent's permission since you're doing it by the rules ;)
I know my own daemons are on square bases, and it would be a pain to re-base them anyway :P Have fun!
I have a very old 2nd edition Tyranid army. Ive been told (it was before I started playing) that 2nd edition didn't really have any kind of standard for bases, so most of my Nids (and I have over 8000 points) are on square bases. Some of them are on the medium size, some of them are on the large size... there is really no rhyme or reason to it. I have played them at MANY tournaments and never had anyone say anything other then "cool old models", so I wouldn't stress over it.
Expect a few people might snicker at you for using an obviously WFB army for 40k.
