do you have to roll to wound for instant death? me and my friends have always played that if a model is hit by a weapon twice its toughness then instant death is caused and the model dies instantly without a roll to wound but its been brought to my attention that the wound chart still list such wounds to happen on a +2
So do I still have to roll to wound if my battle cannon hits a squad of space marines?
Yep, you still have to roll to wound. Instant Death only affects three things, to my knowledge: if a model has more than one wound, it will kill them outright so long as the weapon wounds them and they fail their saves. Instant Death also negates Feel No Pain and We'll Be Back. You still have to roll to wound, and depending on the AP vs. armour save, they may get an armour save/cover save/invulnerable save.
Ref the Battle Cannon round: yes, as LN said: you have to roll to wound. It's only after the To-Wound roll that the AP =/betters Save is activated. Remember also that a roll of a 1 always fails to wound, so even if something is hit by an 2xT weapon, it could still fail to kill the model hit.
"Tau Commandment #226: Participants who use Velocity Trackers in the Tau Clay Pigeon Tournament will be disqualified"
Thanks. Me and my friends heard it from a vet when we started going to a gaming club and we'd always played instant death was instant death and we kept playing that for a while because we were like "well we've never heard in a battle report a captain (or other multiwound characters) getting hit by a powerfist/battlecannon/etc... and not getting blown to smithereens" and we figured sometime there had to be a roll to wound of 1 lol
I am surprised no one has quoted the page yet (26 brb) as it really has it all there.
You must ‘suffer an unsaved wound’ to qualify for this to happen, so yes you do have to roll to wound.

In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.
