Under the new codex Space Marine Bike Squads have the "Combat Squads" rule which lets 10 man units split into 2, 5 man units. That's all well and good until you look at the bike squad entry in the back of the book. It looks like the squad starts out as 1 Sgt. and 2 Bikers and from there you can purchase 5 additional bikers and a single attack bike. But that only brings the model count allowed in that squad up to 9.
So my question is, to split into 5 man units would you have to either a) have an I.C. attached with a bike, which i am not sure works with combat squads, or b) count the attack bike as 2 models, which doesn't seem to be addressed anywhere that I can see, or c) ignore that they have the combat squads rule because they cannot use it?
The way the new codex is laid out, you really, REALLY need to read both the detailed summary in the back as well as the general fluff entry over in the middle. Most of the unit specific rules and gear are described in the fluff, not back with the points costs.
The Bike Squad combat squads rule is written out on page 68 - it says that a full squad (for a total of 8 bikes and 1 attack bike) can split up. It details exactly how they split further on.
EDIT: FYI: 8 bikes plus 2 wound attack bike = 10 wounds, which is how this actually gets broken down. Model count is just more convenient with all the other single wound Marines.
In case Wraith's response isn't totally clear, the bike squad rules notes that the attack bike counts as two models. It does have 2 marines on it afterall
