Background: IG - a squad of lascannon teams (3) this unit is made of 6 crewman and 3 gun models. The teams have been model on the large base with two crewmen on each base.
Scenario: Assault Flamer jumps on the flank and spews promethium over the entire squad. Template is over all three large bases. How many hits are there?
The old determination was that the crewmen were counted as having their own base, just that they are modeled with the gun. The gun base was the large base. Is this stilll the case in 5th?
The question arises since I am unable to find clarification in the rule book and am stuck with just whats on page 55. Each hit is rolled to decide what it can damage.
In this case:
Are there 3 hits, and each is rolled to determine what is hit (object/crewman)?
Are there 9 hits, and each is rolled to determine what is hit (object/crewman)?
There are 6 crewmen hits and 3 gun model hits, as this is evident from the template?
Edit: My apologies I thought I was in the rules forum, if this needs to be moved or deleted just let me know I will correct it.

I believe (read: 95% Pos) that IG heavy weaps do NOT count as artillery. You treat it as a normal squad, not artillery. EDIT: An artillery unit will have "Artillery" as its unit type (much the same vehicles will have "tank", or "fast." I know the IG codex is old, but check if it has that. I'm pretty sure it doesn't.
As such, if the template goes over all 6 of the guardsmen, it's 6 hits. If it goes over All 3 Bases, but only crosses over 4 of the guardsmen (as if it were angled to miss the last two and just clip the large base), I would say it is only 4 hits.

I just came across your thread, from a few months ago, and it indicated that Heavy Weapons teams weren't Artillery. I wasn't actually expecting you to reply !! (very cool)
However, I would highly disagree with the assessment that heavy weapons teams are not artillery. They do fit every criteria on page 55 of describing Artillery units. I'll have to see if I can look it up in the IG codex.
For thre record my friend (opponent) and I have always treated them artillery, and I only started playing at the beginning of the year with 4th.
"Artillery" refers to a machine with AV10 that is auto-destroyed on a glance or a penetrating hit. Guardsmen heavy weapons platforms do not fit this description.
I am moving this to the rules forum, as you will probably get more comprehensive answers there.
Here's an added question for this situation: are IG heavy weps teams considered as "Units of Multiple Wound Models" (thus following the rules on P.26 BRB ), or are you able to take one wound from each heavy weapon team?
Example: flamer causes 3 wounds. Can these wounds be allocated singly to each heavy weps team, or do they have to be allocated as 2 on one team, one on a second team, and the third team gets off scott free?
I hope this isn't hijacking the OP's question, but it was something which I thought had relevance to it.
"Tau Commandment #226: Participants who use Velocity Trackers in the Tau Clay Pigeon Tournament will be disqualified"
Dear Game Designer,
Rock is Cheese. Paper is fine.
Are they Artillery?
How are hits scored using the Flame (or any template for that matter)?
From the passage above then each is only counted as 2 hits. not 3 ( I was figuring the gun model ) If the large base is just a proxy for 2 small 255mm bases where is the weapon?
