Is it legal to field a space marine captain to be equiped with Relic blade and Storm sheild. I can't seem to find anything that sugests its not allowed in the codex. In fact it apears to be a legitamate(although expensive) option in the captain entry. The reason why I ask is becuase i wanted to field this combo, but this guy at my gaming store insists that its not legal(note this guy plays eldar, not marines.). His main argument seems to be that since the relic blade is two handed a captain cant hold it and the shield at the same time. However, his argument seems to be based in RAI, not RAW. I've looked through my codex and the main rule book and can't find anything that suggests it being illegal. Can someone please give me a reference(page number and where on the page the text is located) to any section of either the main rulebook, or codex SM 5th editoin that states why i cant use this combo. If it is legal however, I would apreciate if someone could give me a reference on pages in the rules where it supports its legality. I just need some way to get this guy off my case. thanks.

It is legal. The support is the fact that it never says you can't take them together. All you have is "may take this" in one section and "may take this" in the other section. It's perfectly fine, and in fact is a reasonably popular choice.

I'll second that. the only restrictions with these items of wargear are that neither of them allow a bonus for having two close combat weapons. Perfectly legal. I use this combo with a captain on a bike. very potent.

I am pretty sure that this is mentioned pretty specifically in the online FAQ. Reason being that some of the combinations possible are pretty extreme. There are no rules against that, merely the fact that modelling the Captain up to WYSIWYG may be pretty tough. One idea would be to build a relic blade into a shield. That would look pretty awesome.

It's not difficult to convert at all. I've got a captain on a bike with storm shield, relic blade, and aux grenade launcher. It took me about 30mins to put together. The relic blade is just an extended powersword.

Well a Relic Blade (page 99) is a two handed weapon, so there goes your allocation of ‘hands’ right there. Whereas the Storm Shield (page 101) is classed as ‘other equipment’ (spelt ‘Wargear’) and is possibly ‘fitted to the arm of the wearer’ (see the entry for ‘Combat Shield’ for this explanation.) And nowhere does it say that it is a weapon – so how could it fall foul of needing another hand to use it? It simply is an allowable ability in the game. If your opponent wants to deny you this combination get him to show you where the use of a shield, cloak, iron halo or whatever ‘equipment’ is allowed from the Codex must use a hand in order to operate. And check the list of what a weapon for Marines actually is on page 144, note well that a ‘Storm Shield' is absent from that list. Since I don’t play Marines could anyone please get back to me and verify my stance on this. Cheers.

Wicky has it there. Your friend is arguing rai over raw. Just point him to the fact that the storm shield may be arm mounted then wait for him to argue about why it works for shooting attacks from behind the model... (this is one thing I never got, I swear it made sense in second ed.)

Actually the opposing argument is baseless as needing a hand to hold a weapon doesn’t apply to a Storm Shield because it’s not a weapon. Just strap the shield over the models back ‘300 Spartan’ style and its good to go for your rear armour Splata. But seriously a ‘shield’ here is just an improved save that is represented by placing the fixture anywhere on the model so that the ability is obvious in the game. Place it on the models base if you want to, it really doesn’t matter.
