    Flat Out and Star Engines

A Fast Skimmer moving Flat Out can move up to 24"

However moving Flat Out means you cannot fire any weapons that turn. Where-as Cruising Speed you can fire 1 Main Weapon (plus any secondary weapons). Combat Speed you can fire all weapons.

Does Flat-out negate the Star Engines which must be used instead of shooting?

Do you need to be able to fire 1 Main weapon to use Star Engines?

If you can go Flat-out and use Star Engines, that's 36"

If you can use Star Engines at Cruising Speed, that's 30"

The codex entry on Star Engines wasn't specific, it just said use instead of shooting. Flat Out doesn't say that it uses up the shooting phase, only that the Vehicle may not fire any of it's weapons. I'm leaning towards 36" based on that.

I've seen the maximum movement for a Fast Skimmer with Star engines referred to both 30" and 36" before. Just hoping to clear up the confusion.

the description of star engines states "in lieu of shooting." which means (as you pointed out) instead of shooting.
you cannot do something (initiate star engines) instead of doing something (shooting) you cannot do.

and a side note: cruising speed is 12"

The Eldar 5th Ed FAQ states that as long as the vehicle with Star Engines is able to move and has not embarked/disembarked a unit, then it can execute the Star Engine move in the Shooting phase.

So as long as the vehicle is not immobilized or stunned, and didn't embarked/disembarked units, it may execute it's Star Engine move.

"In lieu of shooting..." means that you can do this if you don't shoot. Not that you have to be able to shoot to use it.

I have not read the eldar faq (starts looking) so it may counter the definition however
In lieu of --> Instead of, in place of.
you cannot move in the place of shooting if you cannot shoot in the first place.
edit: read faq: the faq overrides the wording of the srat engines, and may be used if you move flat out as already mentioned by mr wing.

Star engines are basically a ‘Run’ rule for vehicles with no D6 variations.
In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.
