Hi there. There are 2 guys in particular at my club who, almost always take flyers in regular battles. I'm told that the imperial armour book allows the use of flyers (usually Apocalypse / opponents permission needed), without consent needed.
Is this the case? As I am tired of facing up to 3 flyers... Thanks. (I have already caught them out with hellstrike missles not having a large blast...lol)
Also if this is so, are the rules for flyers in regular battles the same as the rules for flyers in apocalypse... Ie- Can't assault them, only hit them on a 6 with shooting, only ever inflict glancing hits and you must deduct 12 inches off your range when seeing if you can reach them with shooting.
Thanks for any clarifications!
IA1 does state you need permission, for everything, IA2 is the only one that doesn't as far as I'm aware, and the only flyer there is the thunderhawk, so yes they do need permission to use them, and they probably know that to make it worse.
as for rule comparisons between IA and apoc, dunno, wouldn't touch apoc with a 10foot barge pole
Cool thanks! I was sure you needed to have permission for all of the "exotic" things, but they told me it was legal, and I didn't want arguements.
Shens aside, answer is there, but yes, you need permission to use any Imperial Armor stuff as a general rule ... even playing with a Thunderhawk w/out perms, just b/c an IA book failed to actually state "You need permission," would be a gross stretch of the truth. Sounds like you've been the mature one, and I don't advocate starting an argument with these folks, but at the least I wouldn't play with them anymore.Originally Posted by Dictionary.com

Thanks! Yeah I would try and avoid them for a while. Though I have a bit of a reputation at my club for being "hard to beat"...lol.. So I take any battles I can get.
Its not my fault 6 Hellstrike missles (S8 + 2D6 armour penetration) only stuns my battlewagon and rips a bigshoota off....lol... Best moment of the game. We had a three way, though they teamed up together!! (With their flyers!!). I'm quite proud of how tough my boys were that battle! They did me proud. Another turn and I would have drawn the battle another 2 and I may have won it.. (We had to leave early...lol).
Umm. I've had a chat with one of them and he says that he DOESN'T NEED ANY PERMISSION!
"Ok book 1 what i got says no but you need to tell your opponent your using 'em book 2 with the thunderhawk says you only need permission if the game is under 2000 points"
So could you guys tell me where abouts does it say in IA book 1 that he needs permission. Thanks!!!
You need permission to use anything that is not in the codex. It should be fairly obvious. IA are made by forgeworld, not GW, and thus are not legal to use without opponents permission.
Just because it does not say he cannot take them, doesn't mean he can. Next time you come up against him, put on a toy dragon, claiming its unkillable, and say 'Ah, but my codex does not say I CAN'T take it!'
And besides, it says he must tell you he is before the game, so if he says he is using a flyer, refuse the game. Thats essentially what opponents permission IS.

Those people sound like scum. As stated above 40k is GW and that means GW rules. IA is not GW. Flyers also don't conform to the FoC which is the basic rule of all 40k gaming. If it isn't in the dex you can't have it. What sort of game size do you play most flyers are dirt expensive so I guess you are running at least 2500 points. If you do play at that points level bring a couple of stompas but then again you play orkz and orkz rule even without stompas.
but as I said in PM
A quote from Imperial armour volume 1 page 7 "using this book"
"Amongst all the gamers feedback, there are two common questions. Firstly is, when can I use my FW models, are they 'legal'?, the real answer to this is that it is solely up to the players involved in the game"
since its up to the Players and not an individual player, both of you have to be aware of whats being taken and agree upon it before the game starts, FW tanks, there really should be no problem as there balanced and overpriced, Super heavies, you need 2500pts and permission anyway, and flyers, well its right there that you both have to agree upon it.
your "friend" taking them every single game without asking is breaking the rules and is cheating.
He quotes, Pg 7
"the answer then is "Yes" fell free to use these vehicles none of them will spoil the game, but will in fact enhance it"...
