Thread: Rules Update, Unit Distinction

  1. #1

Ok, this might land myself in the hall of anal retentive attention to detail, but I was looking over the rules update downloadable at GW and something caught my eye.
In the unit types, it denotes that there are different types of infantry, specifically Jump/Jet, Bike/Jet Bike, Riders/Beast. Now, the description under Jump/Jet says that "Jet" can always move six in assault, and under Bike/Jet Bike it says that "Jet Bike" can always move six in assault. But when describing riders/beast, it makes no mention of one type, it just lists the ability to fleet of foot.
Now the way I've seen it play, jump packs get the six inch move in assault, but (and here's where I'm being anal retentive) the description specifically says "jet" in front of that ability. Am I being too obnoxious or is it possible that by making the distinction the rules are stating that only Jet and only Jet Bike receive the listed ability, while by making no distinction riders/beast both get their listed ability. Anyways, the more I look at it the more I feel that way, especially because both have an additional ability listed prior, with no distinction. So, any thoughts, has this been discussed already?

(Also, I play Tau, so I admit to being biased.)

Its too early to try and draw such distinctions. What you're reading is just a summary of the 4th ed rules. The actual language defining the rule, and/or examples could be quite different in the book itself. I anticipate that it applies to both and not just the "jet" versions.

It seems to me from the summary that the distinction between JUMP and JET is quite intentional.

At the moment it seems that:
JUMP pack - Move 12", Assault 6" if there are enemies within range.
JET pack - Move 12", Assault 6" regardless of enemy proximity.

Whether or not this distinction will transcend to the new rulebook, who knows.
No doubt it'll all become more or less clear in the fullness of time.

I take it its only jet packs that get the move during the assault seeing that TAU is the only army that has jet packs.(that i know of)
