I just noticed that independant characters that are attached to other units also become re-independent in the assault phase, which sucks badly. that means poor eldrad is going to be singled out every turn for me.
however, if the character has a retinue, can you allocate the wounds as normal or is he temporarily non-retinued and therefor incredibly vulnerable again?
As per p.48, if an IC has a retinue, then he counts as an upgrade character instead until all his retinue has been killed, at which point he then becomes an IC. Thus, you would be able to allocate wounds as normal. While in a retinue, the IC cannot be targeted separately.
thank you for the response, that helps me out and hurts my friends. gogo warlocks.
Except Warlocks aren't a retinue anymore, same as marine command squads. If you'll notice, the Farseer and Warlock entries don't use the word retinue or bodyguard anywhere, they're simply an HQ choice that becomes 'unlocked' when you take a Farseer. Pretty much any codex past early 4th edition has eliminated retinues.
