I am pretty sure this is a genuine issue so I am going to go ahead and post something about it.
In the new Imperial Guard codex many of the special characters appear as upgrade options for units. In the past special characters come 'as is', which I am inclined to consider is still the case. However, the whole exchange person x for special character y thing has got me thinking.
Say I exchange my commander for special character A in my company command squad. Will special character A then benefit from an upgrade purchased for the squad? For example, camo cloaks are a squad upgrade. Would the character A benefit from the upgrade or not?
I would say so. Those special equipment applies to the entire unit. The upgrade character is not an Independent Character, but part of the unit. Thus, they get the bonus as well. But they cannot get wargear that is specifically for the Company/Platoon Commander only (i.e. power fist, plasma pistol).
What jy said. If you're paying a flat price for squad-wide wargear then it's only right that every member of the squad should benefit from it, and moreover having a single model in a unit that ISN'T getting the benefits of wargear would make things complicated.
I would be agreeing to the others, they should receive the bonus gear so long as it is squad optional.
Yes, basically what everyone else says. If you buy a squad upgrade the special character benefits from it as well. To see this is the case you only have to look at Gunnery Sergeant Harker's entry in the army list on page 98 it specifically states
"If a squad includes gunnery sergeant Harker it may not take the grenadiers doctrine"
which as the three doctrines are all squad upgrades, says to me unless specifically stated as it is there, any squad upgrade counts on the character as well.
