heres my question:
lets say a land raider and a squad of enemy troops are in an alley, fairly close to each other.
If the land raider performs a tank shock down the alley the full 12, and for some reason, bad dice rolls or whatever, the troops is unable to outrun the land raider or get out of its way due to impassible terrain, is the unit destroyed, having been run over by the tank?
I'm pretty sure they're placed at the closest valid spot, so...behind the land speeder.
... so... the landraider drives through them... so they're ghosts?
Pretty much. I don't have the book in front of me, so I can't double check, but I'm pretty sure it says that if they can't move out of the way, they're placed at the cloest valid spot.
You could always just house rule it.
When tank shocked, the victims don't roll for movement. They simply roll to see if their morale breaks. DoG aside, the troops are instantly 'teleported' to the nearest valid space. If this means teleporting behind the Land Raider, so be it.
Just to help people not waste time with the attempt:
You may not "kill" a unit with a normal tank shock, unless they fail morale and fall back off the board. (Or if its a single model unit that fails a Death or Glory.)
This question pops up from time to time. Its a somewhat reasonable misunderstanding; but Tank Shock is intended to either make an enemy Fall Back, or move them into a better position.

Do you really mean “from a better position?”
As Tank Shock was intended to drive troops out of cover.
In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.
well thanks for helping to clear that up... though i still think itd be better if:
if a unit passes the moral test, it can simply "run" over the tank like its difficult terrain if the alley is too narrow to go to either side .
however, if the unit fails the test, and fails to outrun the tank and there's nowhere to place the models (seeing as how they can't go over the tank because they are fleelng from it) then the unit should be destroyed.
t would be very rare for this to happen but still.
also, i think devilfishes and hammerheads should be able to "land" on units to cause wounds.
i'm getting a bit carried away now but maybe there should also be an ambush rule? ie if an enemy unit cannot draw line of sight to one of your units at the beginning of the turn, your units can assault them in a special "ambush" rule which gives certain bonuses... like each model automatically hits with 1 attack.
