This question came up earlier while playing my friend who plays IG. We weren't sure why guardsmen have a close combat weapon. As they do not have multiple close combat weapons, it seems like it would confer no bonus. So my question is do the close combat weapons alter the workings of the guardsmen squad in any way?
Usually it's the sergeants/commanders who carry close combat weapons and laspistols. Normal infantry just carry lasguns. CCW+laspistol gives the sergeant/commander an +1 A.
I think that having the ccw standard is a just way to save space on the page. It keeps the line "The Sergeant may replace his lasgun for a laspistol for" from extending to two lines. It's sounds like a dumb reason, but that's all I could come up with.
Yeah, there's really no reason at all. Awesome. But the ccw is free, so whatevs.
Well, it DOES let you model your guardsem with a cool CC weapon without somebody jumping you and fussing about WYSIWYG.
And if somebody fusses about you NOT modeling CC weapons, they just have brass knuckles in their pockets.

Bayonets would be standard issue, unless the Regiment was somewhat "irregular" (or poor).
It might just be that GW is injecting a little fluff into the rules here and there. After all, most FAQ answers are never resolved with explanations of rule wording, but fluff.
Point in case:
The new IG FAQ does not enforce the rules about FRFSRF and hotshot lasguns by telling folks that they are obviously not the same weapon as normal lasguns by strict wording, but by a nice little fluff point concerning the potential firing rate of a hotshot weapon.

Do close combat weapons on guardsmen do anything?
I assume they stab people :/
All seriousness, I don't think they have any ingame effect by themselves in the current rules.
