I'm a newb to the forum. I tried to search for a similar threads and found a few, but wanted to make sure I've got it correct. My question is about vehicle height and using troops as cover. I play IG so this could be a frequently used rule.
Lets say I have a sentinel behind a gunline of guardsmen. As I understand, the sentinel will receive cover since over half of the FACING is obscured by the troop figs, even though the troops only come up to about the sentinel's knee (not covering over half the MODEL).
Meanwhile, the weapon on the sentinel is well over the top of the troops helmet and can draw an unobscured line to the enemy, so no cover.
The same is true for the hull mounted weapon on the leman russ (it's just above the height of the guardman's helmet), but no so with the hull mounted weapon on a chimera, because it's about a 1/2 inch lower.
This may be basic stuff to you all, but help is appreciated.
This has been raised before, by me as a matter of fact, I will try to find a link to the thread.
In the mean time, in general in order for a vehicle to be granted a cover save, 50% of the facing has to be obscured by a unit/terrain/something. Even a unit of 30 guardsmen tightly packed together, would likely not obscure 50% of a sentinel. Keeping mind that the legs and the body make up the total "facing". Solidly blocking just the two legs up to the knee joint, wouldn't really count as a 50% coverage.
2 Main suggestions:
1) Can play it as a 5+ cover save, as its really too close to call
2) or just deny it outright, as coverage given the physical size of the models would be near impossible.
EDIT: Found the threads I was looking for.

which actually links again back to the top link.
And Welcome to LO. I'm pretty confident you'll be able to get nearly every bit of information you're looking, from a decent size group of well informed individuals.

In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.
