My friend and I were discussing this, and were baffled. Our rulebooks are at the place where we play every Sunday so we don't have the ease of looking it up to confirm.
Say a unit has a mix of heavy/rapid fire/assault weapons amongst it. How would this unit go about assaulting?
Would they still be allowed to assault if they all shot their weapons though the models holding heavy/rapid fire weapons are disallowed to make any attacks after the assault move, and would just move along with unit to maybe attack next turn?
Or would you have to only shoot with the assault weapon models to be able to make the assault move in the first place? (pretty sure this what happens)
Notable Achievements: Farseer w/ SS taking down a Monolith all by itself in one shooting phase. A Warlock w/ SS in a Guardian squad on an objective taking down a Soul Grinder in one Shooting phase. 2nd turn 2 DSing Trygon Primes going from 6-0 wounds during turn 3.
If you fire any non assault weapons, means the whole unit cannot assault.

exactly as sun says. You can fire the assault weapons fine and then assault, but if you fire teh heavy or rapid fire then you've disallowed the entire unit.
Just a reminder. Space Marines usually carry a bolter (rapid fire) and a bolt pistol (pistol) as part of their standard war gear. They can choose which weapon they fire depending on their assault plans. And as stated above, they can also choose not to fire.
Take a typical tactical squad with 1 special weapon, 1 heavy weapon, a SGT, and 7 bolter marines. All 10 marines can fire a bolt pistol, before launching an assault.
