I'm working on a tournament list, and I'm about to start painting my FW Venerable Dreadnought. I've been getting a lot of feedback that the Venerable Dreadnought is not really worth the points, and to be honest I could use a few extra elsewhere.
Do you think there would be problems if I wanted to use the model as a regular Dreadnought?
If the weapons are right and you tell people it's standard, there's no problem. It's just a fancy dreadnought.
I like Venerable myself, it's probably not quite worth 60 points but it's kept many a dread alive for longer than anyone expected!
Tbh I certainly wouldn't have an issue with it, the weapons options are the same for both, all you really lose is the extra armour and the invulnerability to stunned results.
You don't loose the extra armour as you can buy it for standard.
Nobody will say anything if you use a venerable model as a normal dread, as long as you pay the points and stick to the rules for the normal dreads.
Personally i don't understand people who don't automatically take extra armour for their vehicles. It should be a must have in everyone's army, regardless of how many vehicles you have and what all those multiples of 15 pts can be used for.
Ive been doing exactly the same thing in my army,Both a venerable and regular dreadnought have exactly the same armor values, a venerable has +1 WS and BS plus the venerable special rule which you cant really represent on the model so I dont see any issue with this, there might be more problem using an ironclad instead as it has a greater AV and some awkward player ata tournament might cause problems. but if you are really unsure contact the tournament organiser and double check with them.

Just to clarify, as it seems Ironclad's and Venerables have conflated somewhat regarding extra armour.
Ironclad's have higher frontal and side armour values, and also come with Extra Armour as standard.
Venerables have the same armour values as regular Dreads and also have the option for Extra Armour at the same cost as regular Dreads.
Greetings from Planet X, I hope you enjoy your day.

It doesn't matter if you use a Venerable or a standard model. It's just representing a model which you are using as a standard Dreadnought. Just because it has a fancy front doesn't require it to be played as a Venerable. Heck, you could dress it up like the Hello Kitty Dreadnought if you wanted; it would still just be "a standard Dread" according to your list. However, it would be courteous play to inform your opponent that you're not fielding a Venerable.
