    Fall Back!

I was playing with my Tau gunline army against a Terminator-heavy Chaos force. My Fire Warriors were assaulted by said Terminators, and miraculously killed more than I lost, two to one.

I won the combat, but obviously didn't want to stick around. Is it possible to "quit" a close combat in any way (other than a forced retrear)? Can a unit fall back voluntarily?

Necrons - 3000 Points: 13W/0D/0L - Death stands above me, whispering low...

You would need a special rule that allows you to choose to fail a Morale Test, such as Combat Tactics.

    Tau have no such rule.

So a locked-in-combat units is "forsaken", unless it (wonderously) wins the combat or falls back safely?

Yes, in normal circumstances, if combat is drawn, ie no one is destroyed or falls back, the combat continues to the next player's turn. The Hit and Run special rule allows a unit to make a 3D6 move at the end of the combat phase if the combat is drawn, and they pass an Initiative test. This move ends the combat.
