Hi ALL, My brother and I are new to 40k and we are trying to learn the rules. We bought Battle of Macragge and noticed it came with a little official 40k rule book. Is this all I need to play? Or do I need to buy the $50 version? We have everything else that is needed (models, codexes, etc) which left is very broke. I can't justify the $50 book for a while. What ever happened to hard cover rule books like D&D being around $20!! Jeesh! I'm aware the game is expensinve. We used to play the Fantasy version a while back. Wish I still had those figures... |

Everything you need to play the game is in that little book. (Y) The bigger rulebook just contains modelling guides, more battle scenarios, and big colour sections detailing different races, etc.

As stated above the rule book that came in the box is everything you need to play Macragge. If however you want to take the figures and play tabletop battles outside of Macragge scenarios then the rule book will be a good buy, as it has the complete set of rules in. I have not seen the rules for Macragge, so don't know how simplistic they are when compared to the book. If buying all the bits you have currently left you a little low on funds, i would wait until you either want to play against other opponents/armies before buying the book. When you say you have the models, which models do you mean? Do you just have the Macragge models, or have you expanded those forces with other units/vehicles as per the codex's? Either way if you are thinking of playing armies then you will need an army yourself - and too build that you will need the relevant codex's, the new Space Marine Codex comes out mid november, the nid codex won't be out til at least next year, so depending on which army you want to use from macragge you may need to get the new codex's when they come out. This will help you build the armies legally, and once you have your minimum sized army to make it legal, then you may want to get the rulebook. Welcome to the expensive hobby that is Warhammer 40000!!!!!

The Macragge rulebook is just the first section. After reading this you will be prepared to play anybody in a standard game with a standard army. -Metalore

Sorry for the duff information about the rulebook. I was under the impression it was a simpler version of the rules, but obviously not. With regards to using the forces in the box to field armies, you are going to have to spend more money on minis to make them legal in the smallest size possible. But that is part of the fun, if it was a case you could only go and buy a complete army then we all would be playing exactly the same forces, but now you get to build an army how you want it - as governed by the codex's. Have fun

Thanks. As it stands right now I have the figures from Macragge and I bought a crap load of extras because the local honny store was looking to get rid of all their Warhammer stuff so it was %50 off!! I have the Nid Codex and the mini rule book from Macragge I have a Hive Tyrant, Carnifex, 8 Hormogaunts, 16 Termaguants, 16 Genestealers, 3 warriors, 2 ripper swarms. So would the amount of units I have currently along with the 2 books suffice to play a legal game of 40k? My brother just bought a small force of Chaos warriors as well with the Codex so at least I have a learning partner ![]() Also, any recommendations on what units I should start with? Lets say we are doing a 500 point game. I'm guessing I should do something like this (I still have to equip them using the codex, but for now I'm just picking out the basic units unmodified) 3 Warriors as an HQ (Moist likley gun/scythe combo with leaping) 12 Termaguants Troop choice (Hive node) 8 Hormagaunts Troop choice (Hive node) 12 Genestealers Troop choice (Extended carapace) Before anyone says anything I know I need more Hormogaunts and that is my next purchase. I just wish I could purchase hormaguants and nothing else. I hate how I get termaguants with them. I don't plan on using as many terms as Horma so to me it's a waste of money. I'm thinking Biovores might be a good investment as well. I can afford maybe about 2. Lictors would be nice, but I hear they die way too fast, not to mention it's 25 dollars for one blister pack!!!

It's great that your brother is also starting the game. If you ever are thinking of buying a new model or testing out models you don't have, call over your brother, and use proxies (coins, spare bases, etc) to test out the models in a small game with your other models.
