Can you shoot into a close combat between 2 enemy units (for example in a Carnage battle). This came up with Black Templars with a lascannon shooting at a combat between a Defiler and 4 Dire Avengers. We decided to randomise the hits counting the Defiler (walker with AV>12) as 10 models. I think that you wouldn't hang back from shooting for fear you might (emperor forbid) hit the WRONG ENEMY, but would blaze away, not caring if you killed the hateful heretic or the equally hateful xenos. Anyone have any ideas (note that I think even the new rulebook has oonly 2-player scenarios, and Carnage is Chapter Approved, so this isn't covered0/

In this case you just have to come up with a house rule. By the letter of the rulebook you cannot shoot into close combat, but as you said, the rules are designed for one on one games. It's really up to the players on how to handle this as there has never been an official ruling on the subject.
The enemies of the Emperor fear many things. They fear discovery, defeat, despair and death. Yet there is one thing they fear above all others. They fear the wrath of the Space Marines!

that makes sense, but what about shooting at guys in cc when your guys that are firing are behind the enemy so that they cant see there allies...

GW explain that by talking about the "swirling maelstrom of combat". To put it simply, theyre running around, circling, etc. not standing still.

According to some ancient Q&A that the guys up there talked about, you can do it, but you have to randomise the hits somehow.

The way I've seen it done is this: Closest model's unit is 1-4, any target of your choice is 5-6. Roll and see what happens. This simulates both the fire at closest target w/leadership and the randomness of combat. Plus it works for a 3 or 4 way melee. Although it does suck for that one guy who's lone terminator is closest to a whole squad of plasma and melta salamanders.

The warzone -a quite dead game- had some pretty good rules about shooting into CC taking into concern the size and number of the units involved. GW gave a stupid explaination on the matter just to avoid some hard-to-understand-by-10-years-old-children rules. I will try to dig up the rules and inform you about them.
