I was playing necrons and i had a monoloth, doomscythe and 2 nightscythes with an immortal squad plus harb of the storm in each, all in reserves and on the board i had 5 units. My opponent said because i had more than half in reserves i had to have one squad of immortals disembarked and start on the field but i thought otherwise. Who was correct.

Well, the scythes don't count towards the limit of half the army in reserves p 124 preparing reserves, they are flyers and have to start in reserves p 80 Aerial Support.

The units with the nightscythes as dedicated transports counts as one unit with the scythes, so they don't count either, p 124 preparing reserves.

Don't think you can be embarked on the Monolith, but I might be misunderstanding you there, and not relevant to your question.

If I understand you correctly you had three flyers with their units that don't count, Monolith and another unit of Immortals, and 5 units on the board, you're three units in the plus when it comes to the half of your army in reserves rule.
