I'm converting a Terminator Lord using Abaddon's body, I just got the body itself today through mail order, and was about to start drilling holes in the base which came with it, when it suddenly occured to me that I needed to check whether you could only use the larger sized bases (not sure on the exact measurements, but it's about double the size of your standard round base) on certain models.

Are there any prescriptions about which models can be mounted on which bases, and if not, do you think it would be cheese to use the larger base? (Since it does affect close combat slightly.) On the positive side, it makes the model look much neater, and would allow for some nifty stuff on the base itself.

You should use 25mm for most models, 40mm for Terminator sized models and other semi-large creatures and 60mm for nothing but the largest walking models such as dreadnoughts and the like. Using larger bases than recommended or smaller is a bit irritating as it substantially alters the model in question, Such as using MASSIVE bases for "cool looking models" I dont care if you convert but use the correct base if you intend to play real games

So the answer is 40mm base for terminators

Yes well legality and playability are two different things. You can make a base thats 14 feet long. So what? GW makes 3 sizes of 40k bases, those are the bases you should use and they should be what other models their size use. To use a base drastically out of place is just a game issue and while some opponents may not care, a lot will.

Actually, all the terminators depicted on the mail order website use 20mm bases. It's only Abaddon who uses a larger base, presumably because he's a more important character.

While it would be possible to fit his body onto a 20mm base, indeed, I think I have seen it done, it wouldn't look quite right. That, and the feet stick out over the edge.

That's the dilemma, I'm not whining just because I want to stick it on a dreadnought base and engage an entire unit in CC at once.

You can put it on a 40mm base with no problems. The terminators with the 20mm bases are the last of the old style termies. All new terminators are being released with a 40mm round base. I put most of my heros, even not in termie armor, on 40mm bases.

I think you have to use a base at least as large as the one the model came with
not sure where (or if) it says this in the book

    Rolf.

ps : as far as a 'wrong size' goes how about putting a dread on a ~1cm base and claiming it's hopping?

Check the BGB, but it states that you can never use a base smaller than the one GW provides, but can always use a bigger one. This has implications in the game of course, as the bigger your base, the more models that you can have in base to base /2".... Thus your character/termie/whatever will have more people to kill/more people who want to kill him .

    Hope that helps,

Using a larger base also has the nasty habit of letting you get hit more often by template weapons.
