Ok, me and my friends played our first 40k game last weekend and we are all a bit confused how CC is handeled concerning Init. and the 2" away rules.
Before reading on I understand this maybe very basic to alot of you and if you are going to be annoyed with my question and tell me to re-read the rules and just make fun of most of us new guys learning I don't want to hear from you. Only people who are willing to help please.
I was in CC with my Eldar scorpion squad VS a squad of grey knight marines. Now I have a higher Init so I attack first with my mandiblaster attack then my regular attacks. I kill the 2 guys in base 2 base contact and there is still 2 marines 2" from me as well.
Now here is where I am confused.
1. If i have more attacks that have caused wounds even after killing the 2 marines in base 2 base do I wound the 2 marines that are also 2" away from me?
2. If I can attack the marines 2" away from me and they make armor saves or I miss do they get to attack back being as they arn't in base 2 base?
3. If I can only kill the marines only in base 2 base with my scorpion and I kill both of them does this mean the rest of the marines will have no attacks back and wait to pile in, then we start CC all over again with me going first cause of my higher init?
Thanks for all of your help
first it is clear that you made an attempt at reading the rules so no flame wars
1 = yes, all units that are engaged can be removed as casualties (pg 41 under "suffering wounds and removing casualties) and the rules for figuring out who is engaged are on pg 38 under "Who can fight?"
2 = no, because they are not engaged because there is on one in BtB... However if your friend removed the ones in the back first then there would be 2 in BtB and they therefore could fight.
3 = although you have a 2in kill zone it is possible to kill enough to prevent any return attack

Thanks that clears things up for me.
One last add on question...
Is it 2" kill zone from my character in CC or his in B2B with me?
He was playing from his character in b2b not mine. That didn't seem right to me, I would think it is 2" from my model he is fighting.
he was right... page 38 states that a model is engaged if it is 2in from a friendly model in BtB. also make sure to re-read my old post as i changed one of my answers after taking a closer look at what you said.
Quick run through, from start to finish because I know how it works and the previous answers confused me:
Charge is declared and models have been moved.
Start with the model(s) with the highest initiative. If they are in BtB or are within 2" of a friendly model in their unit in BtB, they resolve their attacks and can kill any model in BtB with a friendly model within 2" of the attacker.
Once those are resolved, move to the next highest initiative and repeat the above process. If a model is not in BtB or within 2" of a friendly model in the same unit who is in BtB when it is his turn to attack, he may not attack. This determination is made at each initiative step and can change several times if there are several different I values in the combat.
Independent Characters are treated as a seperate unit in CC and thus can only fight if they are in BtB and can only kill models in BtB or within 2" of models in BtB.
As the rules work it is possible and sometimes even likely that attacks can be wasted because higher initiative models have killed everything that was in BtB or in the dangerzone prior to a model getting to attack. This is one of the reasons (it says so in the rules is the other) that you want to maximize the number of models in BtB when you make assault moves. All models that can be contacted, must be contacted. It is also possible that by the time one side gets to its highest I model, there are no models in BtB and that side doesn't get to attack at all.
