Since starting to learn 40k, my friend (who's been playing it much longer than me) has told me that in an average troop squad, one of them may have a power weapon/power fist. He said that they count as your 'squad leader' but have the same stats as an average guy and don't cost you any points.
Now, having come to read my chaos codex, it would seem that the average troops in my Iron warriors squad can only have bolters/bolt pistol and close combat weapons whilst one can have a heavy weapon, and another one can have a special weapon. it makes no mention of any power weapons/powerfists (that i can find).
The closest i can find to a 'squad leader' is an aspiring champion which you can upgrade one of your men to. Can you just call one of your guys an aspiring champion or is there a specific model that you must use?
Sooooo...has my friend been lying/wrong? What weapons can a squad of troops have, and also if one member of a squad has a boltgun, can another have a bolt pistol/chainsword combo? or does it have to armed the same?
Any precise explanations will be GREATLY appreciated, thanks.
Basically your friend was right. In very most units one model can be upgraded to a character, e.g. aspiring champion, veteran sergeant, exarch, succubus, nob, whatever. If there is such an option, then it's clearly described in the codex entry of that unit (usually the upgrade costs some points though). These characters can get equipment and weapons from the armoury, and in case of an aspiring champion he can have a power weapon or power fist and lots of other goodies. An aspiring champion should be visible as such, you could paint him a little differently, add some extra bits. If he has some special weapons, then these should be represented in an appropiate way.The closest i can find to a 'squad leader' is an aspiring champion which you can upgrade one of your men to. For example you can have a squad with bolters, but one of the marines has a lascannon, one a melta, and the aspiring champion has a power fist. It is not possible to have four models with bolters, three with pistol+ccw and some more with the upgrades which i mentioned above though - the basic weapon has to be consistent (unless clearly stated otherwise). What weapons can a squad of troops have, and also if one member of a squad has a boltgun, can another have a bolt pistol/chainsword combo? or does it have to armed the same
