Duplicate Characters

1. Most big tournies don't allow special characters.....the only time I've seen this come up was in a friendly Necron vs Necron game pick-up game. Two Nightbringers going head to head. Necrons don't allow two in one army because you are limited to one C'tan per army....
2. I say if you own the model you should be able to use it. Fluff should not ruin fun. Nightbringer vs Nightbringer was an epic battle. It was the most memorable Necron game I have seen. No changing lists....Shrike vs Shrike for bragging rights...."We just proved who the real RG are...." as opposed to, "I out rolled you...I get my Shrike...now change your list."
3. It is a fun loop-hole that I would not exploit. Not because it's I don't want to...it's just I have a hard enough time painting the uber detailed Charaters as it is....who wants to paint/buy two.

When opponents have the same character I don't see any drama. To take the example of Shrike Vs Shrike, just consider one of them as a different WS Character whose history has never been told. Call him BOB if you want and just consider him the same calibre as Shrike.

If you had to roll off so as not to allow duplication you could end up with situations like....."Well my army is the Blood Angels 2nd company so how can you and I both have the 2nd Company and both have the captain??" It just become stupid.

Furthermore, "My army is preheresy so technically none of your soldiers are born yet so I win..."

Just because GW seem to lose their grip on the english language and to some extent reality doesn't mean that we too must abandon our senses.

As for a single army having multiple special chars in it, well....
Again you could consider one of them Shrike and one of them BOB. If it was a fun game and the player asked first I might allow it if I felt like just having some fun with it, but if it were a serious game or tournament than no way.

I know there is no specific rule to stop a person from taking multiples (at least none that I have seen or have been presented here) but a real limiting factor will be the limit on relics etc. Some of the space marine spec characters have an iron halo and an army is only allowed one of them. I'm not sure about other armies though.

I think if I was about to play someone who had two of teh same special character I'd just take my models off the table and leave.

You know, I think the two C'tan(s?) get more play time than any other special character that I can think of.

Actually, considering how many Necron armies I see with them and basing their army strategy around them, I think a new term to describe them has to be invented.

Kinda special characters?

Rare characters?

Ubiquitous special characters?

More often seen than not characters?
