1 Heroic Senior officer with 5+ invulnerable and 4 IG in retinue. They must make 7 wounds from 3 Necron Destroyers. How does he allocate the wounds? 4 wounds at the IG (that don't have an armour save because of the weapons ap 4) and 1 at the HSO. He must allocate now 3 wounds. How does he do that? Does the HSO take an additional 3 wounds or does the retinue take it?
you can put all 3 on the retinue, or 1 on the HSO and 2 on the retinue... but you cant put all 3 on the same guy
essentially, its the same as the first time
You cannot overkill models in a unit. What would happen in this case, since there are more wounds than squad members, everyone would take a hit off the bat. Assuming no cover save and the HSO made his invulnerable... 4 wounds kill 4 IG and 1 saved by the HSO. That leaves 1 HSO alive and 2 wounds left. Those 2 wounds must now be applied to the squad, which consists of only the HSO.
The HSO would take 3 invul saves to see if he survives, the rest would die automatically.
this is half right... but arent you meant to allocate all the wounds before taking the armour saves? usually it doesnt matter, but in a case like this where it would you allocate them all, then roll to see who dies...Originally Posted by moob
the idea is that the shooting happens simultaneously and therefore the same guy can die many times by taking extra wounds as the firing units members fire on the same targets
Ok first things first, the heroic senior officer counts as an independant character so for any wound sto be allocated to him there must be at least 1 destroyer in base contact with him, then he must, before rolling to hit, designate which attack are going against the senior officer. The thing is wounds cannot allocate to an independant from a squad and the squad cannot take extra hit from overloading an independant character with wounds. Read the independant character rules section in the 40k rule book.
what you say is true except we're talking about shooting attacks, not HtH. so torrent of fire rules come into play.
"i am a leaf in the wind, see how i soar"
holy crap, lots of people are wrong about this.
seven wounds go into 5 models, so because there are more wounds then models the shooter gets to nominate one model to be forced to take a wound, then the rest of the wounds are distributed via the rules for mixed armour.
So lets assume the shooter nominates the officer to force a save (a smart move). If he fails then he dies and the other 6 wounds go to the squad (who dont get saves and will die).
If he lives then the other 6 wounds are distributed by the rules for mixed armour. This means that the majority armour type (the guardsmen) each take a wound first then the officer takes a wound, now that everyone has taken 1 wound the remaining wound (or wounds if there was more than one left) get assigned the same way, (so it goes to the guardsmen first). So the guard take 5 wounds and dont get saves so they die and nothing happens to the extra wound that they take. The officer takes 1 wound and gets to make his invul. save again.
Note: if the shooter chose a gaurdsman to be forced to take a wound then the guardsman would die and the remaining 6 wounds would be devided, with 5 going to the guardsmen and 1 to the officer, so then the officer would only have to make 1 save in total, not 2.

InnuitFireman is correct. WOunds in excess of the squad size allows the shooter to nominate 1 wound. The rest of the wounds are applied to the majority armor first.
Dark Eldar Archon (2+)
4 Incubi (3+)
5 Warriors (5+)
This is a poorly constructed yet legal Dark Eldar retinue who are out raiding the imperium for slaves. The local Marine commander subjects them to holy bolter fire and inflicts 17 wounds. The first wound is allocated by the shooter, the next 10 wounds are distributed first to the warriors (majority armor), then to the incubi (secondary majority armor) and lastly to the Archon. The remaining 6 wounds once again start at the Warriors with 1 left over going to the incubi again.
Warriors must make 10 saves (except no save allowed from Bolter AP)
Incubi must make 5 saves
Archon must make 2 saves
So the Archon and any surviving incubi are forced to take a leadership test and fail it. The Marine commander chases them off the table edge, back into the WebWay and off his planet.
