I have heard conflicting opinions on Rapid Fire weapons. I have heard they can be fired 2 times, only if the target is within 12". I have also heard from many people (including someone working at a GW store) that they can be fired two times if the target is within half-range. (ex, a firewarrior could RF at 15" instead of 12") Could anyone clear up this question for me?
If a rapid firing unit has moved, their only option is to fire twice at models within 12". If the rapid firing unit has not moved, they have the option to either fire twice at models within 12", or fire ONCE at models within the max weapon range (24" for most things, 30" for Tau Pulse Rifles, however the rapid fire range after moving is always 12" regardless of max range.)

Ok, thats what I thought it was, and thats how I've been playing my home games. It still seems kinda wierd how something like a Krootox Rider can shoot once at 48", or twice at 12" (you would think it would be something longer ranged then that, but whatever, I didn't make the rules)
Well, it makes sense, as the 'twice within 12"' represents short bursts of fire at short range. The rifle may be able to make accurate shots at up to 48" but when the enemy is only 12" away, you will fire more shots.
Gareth is the person I try to impress when I convert and paint.
There seems to be all sorts of problems with rapid fire left over from 3rd edition. People just need to be pointed to bgb p 29.
You may not shoot once and assault (unless special rules allow it), you may not fire 2 times at 1/2 range (this may stem from the idea that bolters are range 24, so get 2 shots at 12"), you may not kill models outside of 12" if you shot with the 2 shots.
16,000+ of Eldar (only need flyers)
7,000+ of Nids (want heirophant)
6,000+ of Space Marines (need rever titan)
4,400+ of Cygnar (all models for the faction)
1,500+ of Legion (just started)
Yeah the half range rule was used by most people as rapid-fire weapons were all 24" before the Tau Codex came out. Apart from the Warp Spiders death spinners which only had a range of 12".
But it's definitly 2 shots to 12" irrespective of movement. Or 1 shot to max range if you remain stationary.
