Not really a rules question persay...
Wouldn't it make sense that one would be running at their enemy before they'd assault them?
I know that the BGB doesn't specify this, but I think that assault can really only be done right if there is preparation.
For instance, running at your opponent, fire off a few shots, then continue to run until you make contact.
Spontaneous assault, (assaulting without prior movement) doesn't make sense. The assaulters can miraculously jump 6" into their foes.
But that is what they do in 40k.
You run at your enemy in the movement phase, fire off a few shots (from assault weapons and pistols) in the shooting phase and then close the gap in the assault phase (running at them, subject to the normal movement rules).
someone here is confused and it might be me...???
Shut up and play.
Sorry for not being clear.
What I mean is this: You don't move in the movement phase, do some shooting, and then assault.
It doesn't make sense. I just feel that it doesn't work with mechanics to be able to assault spontaneously.
I still don't get it.Originally Posted by Adrian_MalSeraph

But you don't need to if you are close enough already (i.e. within 6'' for most models).
is that what you are calling a "spontaneous assault"?
If you wanted you could move them closer to the opponent's squad (staying at least 1'' away), then shoot and then assault. For the purposes of the game it doesn't matter, though.
Fluff wise you could say that the vet sarge (or whoever) is holding them back to get some shots in first.
Shut up and play.
how about the squad is sort of hunkering down and shooting at their opponents. Then they steel themselves up and hurl themselves at their enemy. How hard is this to imagine?
Take life seriously, its lethal.
Umm, isn't that what the Counter-Attack rule is for?
Did they get rid of the rule that says you cant assault unless you moved in the movement phase?(that was the case in 3rd Edition) I really need to reread the rule book

Hive Fleet Omega Tyranids

'Dark Angel Green' Dark Elves in need of fluff
That was never a rule. The closest would be that you couldn't assault if you had fired Heavy weapons, and if you didn't move in the movement phase you might forget you planned to assault and fire that heavy bolter in the shooting phase, thereby preventing you from assaulting.
I still dont understan the Q, the phases are a games mechanics way to replicate concurent activity, you can run upto your opponent shooting and dive in, this is what the rules represent
Everything you have been told is a lie!
I give up. It wasn't a question, more of a rant.
Can I get this locked up?
