There's lots of discussion of the new Fire Prisim and its ability to combine beams, increasing strength and AP. I saw someone mentioning the extra D6 on the penetration roll that one can get under half range once the AP gets down to 1, which didn't sound right to me...that's the 'melta' special rule, right?
When I looked it up, though, the extra penetration at half range is listed as applying to AP1 weapons, not 'melta' weapons. Now, all melta weapons ARE AP1, so no problem there. But if AP1 is all it takes to gain the extra d6 at half range, why mother even defining weapons as 'melta' when the AP already defines that? Am I missing something?
ARE there any other AP1 weapons that aren't 'melta' weapons?
The hole in the blast from a particle whip is also AP1
AP1 and 'melta extra D6' are VERY different.
Make sure the eldar player doesn't cheat.

I think the confusion here is coming from the 'ap1 makes a glancing hit a penetrating hit' rule. So while ap1 is not a melta weapon necessarily it is helpful to have ap1 against vehicles. Conversely ap- weapons cannot penetrate vehicle armour and are only capable of causing glancing hits.
Hope it helps.

Okay, I don't have my book on me, but I'm fairly sure I can address this. First, the extra d6 for being at half range does only count for Melta weapons, and is addressed under the Melta Weapon section of the special ranged attacks (or something like that). The rule for AP 1 weapons is that glancing hits are automatically upgraded to penetrating hits; they have nothing to do with the extra d6. You said, however, that when you looked it up it said that the extra penetration applied to AP1 weapons; where did you find that? I'm pretty sure that isn't what is stated under the AP1 paragraph on the page prior to the three vehicle damage tables.
Now Melta weapons, would get the benefit of both, i.e. they'd roll an extra d6 for penetration if at half range or less, and if the roll equalled the armour value of the vehicle, they'd roll on the penetrating hit table vice the glancing table that they would normally roll on.
For you final question, there are several weapons that are AP1, but not Melta. Off the top of my head I believe the Tau Railgun is AP 1. I'm sure there are a few others.
Edited out the Vindicator, which is AP2.

In reading the great tome of WH 40K aka "BGB", my read on this issue is as follows. Melta weapons gain extra armor penetration when within in 1/2 range under the "Melta" rule. They also happen to be AP__ (actual number deleted for fear of mods) which means that all glancing hits are counted as penetrating.
There are other weapons that are AP__ but do not gain the advantage of the "melta" rule.
Finally if you look in the BGB, the "melta" and the "AP__" are on two completely different pages.
When in doubt call in an ordnance strike.
