Well I was playing a game the other day, and managed to rapid fire plasma into a squad of 2 remaining models, one with multiple wounds.
1 had a invul save with 1 wound and no armour save, the other a 2+ armour save with 3 wounds. Now I wanted the +2 save model dead, so I nominated it to make a "save" from the torrent of fire rule. What happens to the other 3 plasma hits?
Does he have to pull off the model with no saves vs the plasma due to the pull off whole models rule, or that bit on page... I think 26 about removing models which get no save first, or does he assign wounds back and forth, giving 2 wounds to each model?
Not knowing what the "torrent of fire rule" I'll try and answer this one simply according to the normal mixed armour rule.
Ruling simply says that you must use the majority save or in case of a tie the worst for first.
So he would have had to allocate the first wound to the invul model, the second wound would have gone on the 2+, then as all the models have received a wound, he would have had to start all over again, ending up with two wounds each.
- Just love that maki! -
The torrent of fire rule i believe is the rule where the attacker can nominate a wound victim (still needs to save) if the number of wounds is equal to or greater then the number of models in the unit. Invulnerable saves aren't counted for as saves for mixed armour. So he/she would have the worst armour. The rest would then be divided up.
Model #1 Inv save 1 wound no armor save1 had a invul save with 1 wound and no armour save, the other a 2+ armour save with 3 wounds. Now I wanted the +2 save model dead, so I nominated it to make a "save" from the torrent of fire rule. What happens to the other 3 plasma hits?
Model #2 2+ armor save 3 wounds
4 wounds on 2 models = Torrent of Fire
Wound #1 assigned to the Model #2 by shooter - perfectly fine
Wound #2 would then default to the Mixed Armour rule – majority or worse
2x Models 1 with no save 1 with 2+. Wound #2 would have to be assigned to Model #1 as he has no save (that’s the worse save) but he can elect to take the Inv Save.
Wound #3 would then be taken by Model #2 as with Mixed Armor everyone has to take 1 save before you can loop around with additional wounds.
Wound #4 would then have to be assigned to Model #1 I believe.
With Mixed Armour, wounding hits are applied differently than in this example above, so you are already applying hits specifically to "sets of models". In your example, with only two models in the unit, and both having different Armour Types, we are going to roll for saves for allocated wounding hits separately anyway, so Torrent of Fire doesn't do anything for us.
With all of that being said, for determining the allocation of wounding hits, you simply follow the Mixed Armour rules, which means the first hit goes to the model with no Armour (but has an Invulnerable Save), the second goes to the 2+ Save, then they wrap around again. The result is that each model gets two wounding hits, and Saves are rolled separately.
