My question is about the "free" shot granted by the surveyor. If a unit sets up 14" away, but is on the other side of area terrain for example, and you roll a 15 on the dice, do you get your "free" shot at them, given they may not be in LOS etc.
We discussed this, and weren't sure if the intention of the rule was to represent the unit shooting at the infiltrators as they moved into position. It also occurred to us, if the infiltrators set up 12.5" away, but where they can't be seen, it makes the surveyor a waste of points, as it only become applicable when infiltrators set up over 18" away but in line of sight.
What do you expect for such a ridiculously cheap piece of wargear? I'm including one in my SM army just to fill out the points I can't use - you can't really expect something that's a fraction of 1% of your army to be fantastic.
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone
The whole point (literally) of an auspex/surveyor is to give some measure of protection to a unit that is in the LOS of infiltrators. Not very useful in the grand scheme, but as Rork said it is worth its cost. I like to put one on my devastator squad sergeants just for the cool look. I have never actually taken one in a game, or have ever regretted not taking one for that matter.
Just out of curiousity, whats next? Maybe you can make an issue about the fact that GW didn't define the action of 'rolling' a D6 to actually mean dropping it in such a manner as to produce a random result; thus making it perfectly acceptable to just put them down with the face up of your choice?
They are really limited in their application, but the first time you get to open up with a full devie squad of heavy bolters, you'll laugh.
Agreed, very limited, as 1/2 of the infiltrators are ones that are only looking for CC, thus will stay out of LOS, the others will be looking for shooting alleys and will usually be out of range.
