Default Do you NEED to buy the rulebook

Hello all,
Just a quick question. Does the rulebook that is included in the BFM box set contain everything you NEED to play the game, Or are there more advanced rules in the $50.00 sucker that I need to see. I know that the Big book has stories and what not but i can live without that.
thanks to all who answer!

SMITE!

Oh, wait, that's a fair question. All right then. Smite delayed.

Joking aside, yes, the BFM rulebook contains everything you'll need to play Standard Mission games, which make up 95% of all games played. The only thing you'll miss out on are the Kill Team rules, the non-standard missions, fluff, modeling tips, and army descriptions.

But as for playing the actual game itself? The BFM rulebook is plenty good, and I know people who use it far more than they use the regular, bigger rulebook.

Caluin hit it on the head.

BFM is great as it has the exact same rules (minus extra stuff) and you get models, and it's cheaper.

There are times where the bgb is great (special missions) but all straight out games are covered in the bfm rules.

Enjoy the extra squad you can afford=)

Everyone needs a rulebook, but the small one is perfectly adequate for the rules in both 40k and FB. If you ever want to play special missions, then yes you will need the big one, but chances are you'll have an opponent who has it anyway, giving you all of the nice special mission goodness without any of the cost.

Hi,
I agree with all the above and just would like to add the fact that even the page number references are the same for both the full size Rule Book and the pocket size one. This is especially handy when cross referencing to the Wargear book and following threads here online when page numbers are quoted. Plus the point that the smaller book is infinitely easier to carry around and faster to thumb through when fact finding. I only have the hard bound larger Rule Book because it is more impressive with the coloured art pictures and looks “very” official when arguing points of law with my opponent.
Something that the smaller “Battle for Macragge” book does lack is the visual impact of the larger version – but as you say, for the money saved……………..
Cheers.

And to follow up on wicky's point, the BFM book hurts less when you hit someone with it after they are shown how wrong they are.

I might add the BFM book is MUCH more portable, and you can be pretty sure that if you play in a store the big honking hardcover will be available when/if needed.

If you've got a friend with a rulebook (or even a communal club one) you don't need one at all. After you play for a while you'll pretty much memorise everything important.

One thing thats nice about the big rulebook, is the ability to leave pages open, sitting there, ready to read at a glance!

Try and do that with the little one, and the spine will break, and pages will go everywhere.
