it came up in the witch hunters forum, and i just wanted to clarify (if i get my question style wrong, i read the intro and i am trying)
Q: if you have multiple flamers (or any templates in a squad for that matter) and the enemy have a part of their squad bunched up do/can you fire them all at once at this bunch and then assign these hits to the other members of the squad that are in range.
so for instance
x = target
z = target being flamed (all one squad)
y = flamers
x zz x
x zz x
so you take the 3flamers*4hits=12 hits and hence all members of the squad be hit(and then some)?
you resolve 1 flamer at a time to decide hits. you attempt to get the max amount of guys. either way your going to get 12 hits, unless its from the side, then you get 6
well if i were to follow what you say, and the first 4 were to die, then i could only get 2 hits a piece on the other two, and that would only be 8.
not wanting to taint what other peoples responses will be, doesn't it say in the rule book that you work out the squad's shooting as a whole in one go?
i mean that when you use the first template you just calcualte the amount of hits from it. then just do hits from the other ones. then once all the hits have been calcualted you roll for wounds
The correct way is hence to place one template, roll to wound the covered figures, let them roll their save (if they get one). Then place the second template and so on.
When all templates are resolved, proceed with normal shooting.

ok, so in that case i can use my rocket launcher to blow up a transport and then shoot at the escaping passengers with my bullet based weapons because they are one unit!
thanks for settling the flamer Q
when a single unit shoots at a vehicle, anything that hurts the vehicle will shoot, and anything that can't hurt the vehicle cant be used against anything else, they sit quietly.
so, for example, if you shoot a flamer/missle launcher unit at an opposing vehicle, you shoot the missle launcher, but you cant flame the bailing unit when they escape the wreck. the intended target for your unit is the tank. you cant split your unit's shooting between the vehicle and the transported unit.
but you can use one of your different units to shoot the foot troops that exited the vehicle and on the plus side, they will be pinned too... shoot them next turn

Jonesie is correct about firing on the vehical. It can be assumed that the passangers do not bail out until after the shooty unit is done firing.
