I suppose this is my first official thread I've started on this website, great community by the way. ^_^
I don't have the rule book in front of me, and was just doing some thinking. So, the rules are a bit fuzzy since I'm going off of what I remember and since there seem to be a healthy amount of rules wiz's on here I thought I'd ask my questions here.
First off I play Tyranids, so please keep that in mind with the questions I have. :3
1. A monstrous creature can shoot two weapons, correct? (I'm pretty sure on this.)
For argument sake, lets say the Carnifex has a Barbed Strangler and a Venom Cannon. Both are the classified as assault type weapons. The venom cannon being able to fire based on the base attack of the model and the stranger once (large blast template). Okay, with that out of the way, here is my question:
2a. Can a Carnifex shoot at two separate units? I'm pretty sure it can't, just curious because of the wording I vaguely remember in the rule book about monstrous creatures able to ignore closer units and freely choose their targets, but not sure if that applied to a model that can fire multiple weapons.
2b. If they can't fire at two separate units this follow up comment won't really matter. If they can...and are in assault range who can they charge? Since, (again going off memory), assault weapon types mentioned something along the lines of, "to fire in the shooting phase with an assault weapon and charge during the assault phase you have to charge the unit you fired on." Or something along those lines.
I guess the other question comes to mind is something that happened during a game between my Tyranids and my friend playing Space Marines.
3a. Can Dreadnoughts walk out of combat or are they locked in it, and have to continue to fight until it's destroyed or what it's fighting is destroyed?
3b. Can a brood/unit walk out of combat with a dreadnought that is immobilized, or are they locked in combat?
Sorry for the lengthy post, but I'm still trying to get the hang of the 4th edition rules. I'm sure I'll have a few other questions that I'll post on these forums, but there were the first that popped up. The last time I played 40k was about 10 years ago...wow time flies.
Thanks again for your time.
2a. The Carnifex cannot shoot 2 different units.
2b. See above.
3a. Dreadnoughts are locked in CC
3b. You cant leave until it is destroyed
Take life seriously, its lethal.
2a. no pg 18
2b. he can only assault the unit he shot at, since we know he can only shoot at 1 unit per turn thats who he has to assault. pg 36 talks about shooting and assaulting
3a. no they fight like infantry in close combat pg 72
3b. no they are locked, pg 38 tells you when you're locked, and pg 44 tells you when you can move once you are locked
getting all those 3rd edition rules out of your head and replacing them with the 4th edition takes some time, just keep playing lots of games and read your rule book regularly and you'll pick it up
Awesome folks! Thanks so much for the clarification, I'll get a hang of this yet. ^^
Am I just delusional or did I read somewhere, that monstrous creatures can leave combat during the movement phase?
Edit: Side comment...what happened to the jamming Assault cannons...those things scare the beejeezus out of me when I play my Tyranids, even more so now because they can't jam and cause harm the shooting model! Or for that matter, why are grenades so boring now? I swear I'll get the hang of these rules on of these days, but it looks like a lot has changes. I suppose some for the better. LOL

i don't know of anywhere in the rulebook that says monstrous creatures can leave cc. Only way would be if they had hit & run, and i can't think of any monstrous creatures that do have that ability.
LM, nice new avatar=)
And yeah, HUGE changes from second edition (all the odd rules you mention take me back).
Sadly you can no longer walk out of cc. and grenades bite. But the AC is still pretty feared. Best gun in the game infact. No longer jams but can't hit 9 times either.
16,000+ of Eldar (only need flyers)
7,000+ of Nids (want heirophant)
6,000+ of Space Marines (need rever titan)
4,400+ of Cygnar (all models for the faction)
1,500+ of Legion (just started)
Thanks again everyone.
Lost Nemesis, you play FFXI? If so what server? >.> /cough
