The Battalion is a super flexible force, but lacks some punch required against some of the really nasty stuff people bring at my GW store.
I generally field the standard battalion, using blood angel units (6 tac sqds with rhinos, 2 devastator squads, 2 assault squads). I take Dante and an honor guard as the HQ. I usually add two squads of scouts, 10 terminators, 3 dreadnaughts, and a 30 man death company, 1 land raider crusader, and 2 Baal predators when I need to field a lot of points.
Now, that might sound like a good force. But, against some of the mega template weapons out there, I get eaten up. A friend plays with all (I mean every single one) of the eldar special characters plus 6 prism tanks plus revenant titans. They eat my lunch.
What's a good way to beef up my fire power? Warhound? Thunderhawk?
Adding squads of Assault Terminators and a Terminator-Armored HQ allows you to field a Terminator Titanhammer formation that comes with a Vortex Grenade - perfect for obliterating the Revenants.... or anything else, really, that gets in their way.
Between the Revenants (assuming 2) and the Phoenix Lords you can field 3 Titanhammer formations with 2 5-man Assault Terminator squads each. With a bit of luck, that'll take out both Revenants, and a special character in one turn. (with a lot of luck, it'll destroy most of his army). After that, adding a Warhound with twin Turbolasers will allow you to drop Destroyer shots on his aspect warriors or Fire Prisms. (Also remember Super-heavies aren't affected by any psychic powers that don't have a Strength value, so no Fortune, Guide, or other shenanigans on them)
"The sergeant major asked me what my job is. I told him it's to do what I am told. He gave me a medal. I like the Imperial Guard."
"Innocentia Probat Nihil"
I've ended up adding a Vanguard Squad, 3 Stormravens, 3 Sanguinary Guard units, a 10-man thunderhammer terminator squad, a 10-man regular terminator squad, plus a few more dreadnoughts. However, the store here just started limiting apoc games to 2000 pts per person, so all this effort was for nought. If I get some terrain built this year, I might start holding large games in my garage. Then I'll be able to pull out multiple companies, my warhound, baneblades, etc...
LOL, you aren't kidding, they are hilarious more than useful... Try watching your own HQ squad disappear along with an objective... Now that was absolutely hysterical.
