Hello everyone, the following is an army list I intend to play test for the next few months in an attempt to build a strong, balanced, fun Imperial guard list. Please note my list is 1000 points but my battle report is for 850 so "red" items were left at HQ and "blue" items were field modifications for this specific battle. Please feel free to make suggestions to my list and tactics as my intention is to build a thread on IG tactics that includes many battle reports. Also note this is literally my first match as IG although I feel I have a strong grip on their tactics and weaknesses. Now for your reading pleasure I give you my 1000 points IG list.

BATTLE REPORT - 850 IG vs IG
Battle was Annilation table quarters with my oponet having first turn. Our battle field had a large hill in the center blocking line of sight from corner to corner, a few other smaller hills scattered about his quarter while the three remaining quarters had one large building each. I was pleased with the quarter i recieved, a large 10'' x10'' 2 level structure provided my guardsmen with perfect cover to spread out on. He deployed his LRBT behind a small shack with his chimera behind it waiting to flank. He had a special weapons squad of plasma gunners on the left flank, two infantry squads and his CCS on the right, and a squad of vets supporting his chimera and LRBT in the center.
My deployment left me with my PCS spread out on two tiers of the building giving my auto cannon a commanding view of the battle field, my Vanquisher parked in the center of the building, supported by a vet chimera to the right, and an infantry squad to the front. My two remaining chimeras were on the far left flank supported with my last infantry squad.
His first turn reminded me instantly of the importance of disabling his LRBT. It moved forward pouring a battle cannon, and plasma cannon shot into my own tank hidden away in the structure. Luckily it caused only two kills to my infantry squad nearby, who survived further sniper and autocannon fire from his CCS. The rest of his firing was a waist as the majority of his army moved or lacked heavy weaponry. My turn saw me pouring lots of las cannon and vanquisher shots into his LRBT only stunning it in place for next turn to decide its fate, my chimeras and remaining guardsmen started pouring lead into his ranks, I think i fell around 4 guardsmen spread throughout his squads, his cover was serving him well.
Turn two saw a few more autocannon shots and sniper shots from his CCS at my wounded infantry squad, they lost another member but passed their leadership tests, his chimera and supporting vets opened fire on my vulnerable infantry squad on the far left flank but they only lost one member. My turn, my vanquisher again set its sights on the opposing leman russ, this time only shaking the crew. At least it would be another turn before he could shower me with template weapons. My left most infantry platoon shot their lascannon disabling his hull heavy bolter on his chimera, my nearby chimera and vet squad shot his vet squad down to two members, on the right flank my PCS and vets were doing the same, taking one of his infantry squads down to only four members, and the far left saw my other chimera four wheeling over a steep hillside to burn 5 out of 6 special weapons team members to a crisp sending the last member running to his table edge. All in all finally a great turn, many more traitor guard left to purge but its a start.
Turn three left him without much offensive ability, he retreated his chimera and LRBT back to behind the small shack and began to regroup his infantry, at this point he was trying desperately to deny me kill points. His CCS opened fire again on my infantry squad taking it down to 5 members remaining but at this point his only hope lie in his LRBT making some great Battle cannon shots. My turn saw me pushing up the left flank with my CCS and supporting vet squadron in their chimera, also my infantry squad moved to give supporting las cannon fire next turn. My vanquisher, infantry squadron in the building, and PCS all opened fire on his CCS bringing them down to just the company commander himself, fleeing for safety.
The last turn before we called it saw him again bringing his LRBT out to fire at me from safety to no effect thanks to my 3+ Cover from going to ground, and his chimera attempting a tank shock on my CCS with 2 melta guns remaining. My guardsmen stood resolute in front of the approaching war machine timing his shot perfectly to explode it inches from his fox hole. From this point we decided to call it as he had a vet squad in the open for my chimeras and vets to gun down and two infantry squads in his rear with little to stop my armor.
All in all a fairly simple battle, i felt i had the upper hand from the beginning with my longer ranged weaponry and ability to bring my veterans to bear on his infantry with little threat of retaliation, my only concern lay in his LRBT which despite concentrated fire and several penetrating hits over the duration of the game only ever rolled a 2 on the vehicle damage chart. I made a few friendly suggestions to my opponent as he was happy to discuss tactics and mentioned before that he was new to warhammer40k. He simply didn't have the long range firepower, nor the mobility to apply pressure to my chimeras as the roamed freely around the map gunning down his helpless guardsmen.
