In a little over a week our local store is hosting a Mega-Battle of rather silly proportions. At the moment it is 7 Chaos Players @ 1930 a piece versus 9 Imperial ( 2 IG, 1 DH, rest SM) players @ 1500 a piece, over 2 tables end to end. IMHO too many players at one time, but what the heck - I got my Stormcrows Chapter and we are going to war.
So, I was trying to come up with some strategy that might have a tiny chance of actually being succesfully implemented when dealing with such a glum - I mean, the deploy areas are going to be packed to the brim. In all likelyhood this is just gonna be a meat grinder with no rhyme or reason.
HOWEVER, this is what I came up with, for you wise ones to comment and criticize freely. Also alternative strategies are welcome.
- Divide, then Conquer
All Marine Fast Attack and vehicle options deploy on the left table. The rest of the troops on the right, except for anything in a transport, which stays in a transport. This may telegraph, what is about to happen, but I don't think so. On Imperial's first turn at bat the Fast Attack break for the right side of the table, while all vehicles collapse into the middle. A row of whatever has smoke screens the rest. By the second turn this armored column should be able to form itself into a wall of armor that cuts off the chaos forces on the right side from those on the left. 2 Imperial players remain at this armored line to keep that half of Chaos from overruning the barrier, while the other 7 Imperials team up against whatever Chaos forces were deployed on the right table. Hopefully outnumbering them and overwhelming them. This is assuming that the Chaos players deploy in a more or less even fashion across their deployment zone.
Comments? Alternatives? Any chance this game will be anything other than a bloody mess? Nearly 30,000 points on 2 tables...
Stormcrows Chapter of the Space Marines
For SM i would say that if your allowed to have an imcomplete FOC then there are acouple options.
all drop pod or infiltrating, get up close and personal and take out havocs, and any defilers ect.
all fast atack, try to get to the other side before getting shot to pieces
all long range sit back and shoot (IMO the most boring) but try to be good artiliry support.
as far as getting a cohesive strat going on... i dont see it happening... yeah you might be able to get an agrement with one or two players... but i dont see 9 players with armies going hand in hand.
what i'de worry about it your own forces. try make the biggest impact (and not a crater) and take out the most models.
In mega battles, its best to pair units up and have them work as one, i.e two tac squads in the same buliding should all fire at one enemy squad, whilst infiltrating units deploy near to each other to spread damage and ensure a fancy infiltrating command squad won't get nailed before combat.

Order Pizza. Usually the first turn takes an hour and a half. So, I was trying to come up with some strategy that might have a tiny chance of actually being successfully implemented when dealing with such a glum
Have players dedicate their units to a specific field role, example:
1 player brings nothing but mounted tac squads and keeps them entirely in reserve,
1 player is kitted for CC only,
and another player is dedicated long range anti tank,
another deepstrikes and infiltrates everything.
This way you avoid players running into or over each other during combat. And it prevents the whole "you attack over there, I'll take care of this." scenario, where someone gets angry for not getting the chance to show their stuff.
Usually it's best to have 2 of everything in that format. And don't forget to use the Guard as meat lines.
Another funny thing to do in a mega battle is get every Dreadnought on the field together in 1 group, then walk them up on a flank. It's hysterical They'll draw so much fire that you'll laugh. You can add in a few Sentinels as well to block fire. Give them a good mix of lascannons and assault cannons, so funny. The opponent will be forced to adjust their deployment to attempt to deal with it, leaving exposed spots along their lines. The last time I saw this there were 8 dreds.

In all my experience with mega-battles, I like the idea of the armored column. Large mobs of armor are essentially the mechanized-army-lists that GW is too smart to ever make. Use your fst attack choices in with the tanks, if you're not already. The assault marines and especially the land-speeders make excellent support units.
