Basically, Horus was turned by the Chaos gods and rebelled against the Emperor. Nine Legions were with him and as they marched of Terra they committed terrible atrocities along the way such as Tallarn (the Iron Warriors virus bombed the paradise planet into the desert wasteland it is today) and Logres, where the Emperor's Children enslaved a million farmers and killed them all within a week.
Horus laid seige to the Imperial Palace on Terra and all that stood against him where 3 Loyalist Space Marine Legions. Horus' forces were on the very brink of victory until Horus disabled the sheilds surrounding his command ship. The Emperor, Sanguinius and Rogal Dorn and a handfull of Space Marines teleported up to Horus' ship. Sanguinius was killed by Horus but this enabled the Emperor to reach Horus and slay him, but at the cost of his own life.
