I believe Starcannon would still have to wound on a 4+ thus reducing 1/2 of the hits, but if you are playing a table with no terrains then, by the dice god, get W.Field for that added protection. One simple size 2 terrain (like a piece of rock) that confers 6+ cover save would already give the benefit of having a W.Field, but then again, try roll 4 dices and pretend those are the lascannon coming your way and now you have to make that 6+ invulnerable save, you'd be lucky if you make one save because that's 2/3 chance rolling all four dices to get one 6.
One more thing I would like to add since it later came into my mind. Tyrants have a natural Toughness of 6, and any range weapon that needs to wound on a 3 or less, hence the S7+ weapons normally would have lower than AP2s. Which would further negates the usefulness of W.Field.
