Basically, Salax is my army's leader. That is for me DEldar army in 40k. Here he is a psychotic, egotistic Eldar (NOT dark) with wraithbone for eyes and an artifical arm. His eyes basically allow him to see the future (slightly) He also sees people as "auras" besides the auras there's no colour to his vision.
The artifial arm is extremely strong, however lacks the finesse needed to wield a sword.
Salax reappears here in fantasy, an alternate universe to 40k.
He is a warrior of chaos. His story, backround and what not will be explained. For now however, you'll get to read a short introduction I've written.
He will lead my WoC army and will make an appearance in the next AoD.
Without Further ado,
Chapter 1 - The introductionEvery chapter I write I write in only 40 mins. These are then spell checked and posted here. Please enjoy, comment and critize!Salax stood across from his opponent. A push over. All brawn no brain. The axe in his hands was as tall as Salax himself.
"Introducing our two fighters! Salax. No last name, No origin. Fast. Intelligent. Human? Has got some crazy purple eyes. Paying 15:1"
"Our other fighter, Kor. Half human, half ogre. Shunned by both races, he makes his living here at the local fight pit. Still undefeated and paying 3:2!"
The crowd booed.
"Salax, do you understand the rules"
"I kill the man opposite me?"
"That's right. Being the challenger you may also choose your weapon. You must use the same weapon in every fight hence forth"
"A pair of daggers" replied Salax.
"Son, we’ve already allowed you to keep your gauntlets on. I cannot also give you 2 blades."
"A single dagger then?"
"As you wish" answered the host as he ordered a guard to give his dagger to Salax"
"A fight ends either when a man submits, is killed or I declare it so! Begin!"
The brute ran forward. He was going to try and uppercut Salax with the axe. Salax side stepped and stabbed. The blow landed true and cut into Kor's hip. Kor simply turned around and raised his weapon.
Salax sighed and threw the dagger aside. To his surprise Kor dropped his axe and raised his fists. This time Salax went on the offensive. It was difficult hitting the large opponent as he could reach no higher than the monster's chest.
Salax struck blow after blow, his left punches missing his right going ignored. Salax jumped up at his opponent's face attempting to drive his steel gauntlet into Kor’s face. Adrenaline always gets the better of him. Salax did not see the left knee but was winded suddenly as it connected. The brute then kicked Salax across the pit with his foot.
Kor laughed and raised his hands in the air. The crowd applauded. He then stamped his foot, imitating a charging bull. Salax was back on his legs as the charge came. Once again, He side stepped and the pit walls shook from the impact. Kor stepped back dazed as Salax' left hook connected with his face. The crowd went quiet as Kor head impacted the wall.
Salax turned and walked towards the exit. He knew Kor would stand up. He knew he'd hold their attention.
As predicted Kor rose bloody faced. He once again raised his fists in the air. The crowd went wild!
Salax kicked the toe of his left boot into the ground. A Small blade came out of his heel.
Kor charged at the seemingly unsuspecting Salax. In the final moments, right before he would connect, Salax leaped backwards past Kor, kicking out his foot as he went past. Kor stumbled as Salax landed.
The crowd again went silent. Suddenly a red slit appeared across Kor's throat. He feebly raised his hands to his throat to stop the blood flow but soon collapsed, his jugular cut.
There was no cheering. No one had bet on Salax. The entire crowd's money was on Kor.
Salax sat in a finely furnished office.
"You were brilliant!" exclaimed the host.
"You wanted Kor dead. You gave me a deposit. I killed him"
"But it was so dramatic!" said the host with a smile on his face!
"Thanks to you I'm now back in business! No fighter has ever made me this much money"
"I think you forget why I’m here" said Salax.
"Oh no, I have your share right here!"
The host handed over a bag of gold coins.
Salax then spoke formally;
"You have contacted the brotherhood to execute an assassination. The assassination was to be a staged pit arena fight against your current champion. You further more requested that your name be not revealed to the assassin. The deposit asked was paid. The deed was carried out. As agreed, you handed over five percent of your day's total earnings.
The contract has been carried out. You are sworn to silence about the existence of our guild, its trade. You are also forbidden to reveal my name. Any breach of these conditions will see you assassinated"
CHAPTER 2 - The DeserterSalax moved quickly through quiet corridors. It wouldn't be long before the guards would uncover their naked and unconscious friend.
He could see the coloured silhouettes of the people in the rooms. It was not late enough for them to see bed.
He knew the duchess he was looking for was half high elf. Her light would be distinctly white.
He could only see grey. Time was running out. He finally saw her form through a large double door. An alarm must have been sounded because the guard at the door was running towards Salax.
Salax wasted no time. He ripped off the chain mail shirt, tabard and helmet. Under them he was dressed in dark leather. His gauntlets seemed to shine in the dark.
The guard took a high swing. Salax ducked it and struck his fist into the guard's mail. The guard dropped his sword. With a flick of his wrist, a small blade extended from the bottom of his fist.
Salax withdrew his fast and continued onwards with his momentum. The guard fell to the ground, his lung puncture. He lost consciousness before he could scream.
Salax concentrated and phased out. He ran through the doors. Once inside he stumbled as he phased back in.
What appeared to be the duchess sat behind a small table. Salax saw her grey outline. She was human and an obvious decoy. He continued forwards towards her.
"Greetings assassin, you'll find that I’m prepared for your arr-"
She was cut off as she leaped to her side. Salax had kicked the table over towards her.
"You inconsiderate bastard!" screamed the decoy as she drew two concealed blades.
"You think the duchess does not have her own assassins?"
"Oh, malady, I know of the two assassins." Panic showed for but a second on the decoy's face.
Without waiting for a reply he drew and threw a knife at the far corner of the room.
Another assassin screamed as the knife pinned his hand to the wall. He had just lifted it to grab the handle of his crossbow. The cross bow remained on his back.
The decoy ran forward, blades at the ready. Salax merely side stepped her and kicked her hill out from underneath her. As she stumbled, he spun around and moved between a large curtain and the decoy.
The decoy recovered quickly and attempted to rise to her feet only to find a pistol aimed at her forehead.
"I care not for my life!" she said as she spat on him.
"How about the life of your master?" replied Salax as he raised his second pistol and aimed it at the curtain"
"Do not move. Either of you. Scream and I'll kill you both.
The doors burst open as two guards ran inside.
"DOES NOBODY HERE KNOCK!?" screamed Salax as he turned both pistols towards the guards. The shots echoed through the large stone room. Both guards hit the ground hard.
Salax quickly spun around only to be impaled by the decoy's blade. Salax phased the flesh surrounding the blade's entrance. He would deal with it later. The decoy still had her hands firmly on the blade.
Salax raised both pistols at the girl's face. She heard them click as he cocked them.
"What are you?" she asked.
Salax smiled. " Complicated"
The decoy fell dead, a hole where each eye should be.
He withdrew the blade from himself and stumbled as he phased the wound back in. It was deep.
He pulled back the curtains to find the duchess.
"M'lady. I am here to inform you that this was a set up. Your decoy assassin was the target. Information was directly leaked to organise this night.
The decoy assassin, though of the brotherhood, betrayed us and disobeyed a direct order.
This service was requested by your uncle and done free of charge, as the assassin was already a wanted target.
With that, Salax leaped out of the window.
"Can someone get my hand free from this dagger now?" asked the assassin who's hand Salax had pinned with the thrown dagger.
Salax's past and reason for existance coming with the next chapter Will explain his phasing and his eyes.
Prologue - Half dark elf, Half man, Half ghost.Phew that was quite the effort to explain. Half dark elf, half man, half ghost. Hopefully an interesting character that won't die round 1 next AoD!For many years, empire scientists have tried to create the ultimate super soldier.
With a combination of science, magic and luck they achieved just this. Salax was born to dark elf slave, however he was never conceived. His father was an empire ghost.
As stupid as it seems, Salax is half dark elf, half empire, half ghost.
The scientists kept Salax alone. He was to make no contact with anyone but them.
In his third year, Salax was abandoned. The scientists suspected Salax was blind. He had no pupils, his eyes were purple. They shone in the darkness.
It took three years for them to confirm this. He responds to movement and has started to speak. He however is constantly stumbling into people. In a recent experiment involving a dog, Salax proved he could not see the dog.
He was taken one night, stuffed into a sack and thrown into a nearby creek. The creek's water ran back towards the town.
An old man, foraging for certain plants found the child, half drowned and showing signs of hypothermia.
He took him home. Carl Eberstark was a retired assassin, his time in the brotherhood long ago served. He was also a wizard. Not incredibly strong, though strong enough to recognise that Salax was not all human.
By the time Salax was 12 he knew how to wield a blade. He was also very talented in hand to hand combat.
Salax's neighbour often took Salax boar hunting. It was on one of this boar hunts that Salax was wounded. He was gored, bitten and thrown by a wild boar.
After many weeks in bed, Carl had to amputate Salax's arm. Carl went to bed that night mourning the fact that his best ever apprentice was destined to never become an assassin.
In the early hours of that morning Salax's screams echoed through their small house. When Carl reached Salax he could see him collapsed on the floor. A new forearm had sprouted from where Carl had amputated it at the elbow. It was a dark purple colour, a perfect match to his eyes. It was also very hazy, but near transparent.
Salax's new arm was incredible strong. He worked hard to conceal this. From the next day forward Salax always wore two long black gloves, stretching from his hands to his elbow. Over that he wore gauntlets; long steel gloves with short retractable blades on the forearm and at his wrist. They were his weapon of choice. Though of course he carried many weapons on himself, including (but not limited to) a short blade on each side of his hip, a blade in each boot, a draich on his back and two pistols on his chest.
Salax entered the brotherhood officially on his eighteenth birthday.
By the age of 21, he had completed his 100th assignment. Salax's vision allowed him to see short distances into the future while at the same time he would see a person's "soul" rather than their body. Through this he could see through walls and predict people's attacks.
Salax could also go ethereal. While ethereal he is in another plane, impossible to kill. Salax can steal see people as shades, but cannot see inanimate objects. Through much training, Salax has managed to only make parts of him ethereal.
An ethereal wound will still heal, but cannot kill him.
Salax was a very competent assassin. He had his eyes, his ethereal background, his arm and his training.
Another piece coming tonight. should be 80 minutes of writing hopefully, a longer chapter. 2 assassinations
Also as a note, I often use things I've seen in movies. I've done it several times so far and there will be another in this next piece. It will be very long and very obvious, tell me if yous catch it!
Here is another chapter!
Chapter 3 - The half dead VS the undeadSalax read his instructions. He was to kill two brothers, both vampires. One is a well known duke of a neighbouring town. The other is said to live in a cellar below their mansion.
He had free permission to kill anyone interfering and was to be prepared to slay many vampires.
Salax made a visit to a local weapons dealer. He walked in and a short man came to the counter upon hearing the door's bell.
"Can I help you sir?"
"I need slaying equipment. Vampire slaying"
"Sorry, we don't sell such items"
Salax drew a brooch from his pocket. On it was the symbol of the brotherhood.
"How about now?"
"Oh...now that you mention it..." The man walked over to a wall and pulled a torch stand down. The wall slide aside and revealed an impressive array of weapons.
Salax came unarmed except for his two hip blades and gauntlets.
He grabbed a large repeating crossbow. He slung it over his back. He also grabbed two smaller hand held version. One on each side on the inside of his leather trench coat.
He slid a stake into each boot.
The short man held up a metal rod two feet or so in length. Salax looked at him questionably.
The man hit a large button on the rod. Salax heard a spring release and long stakes came out of either side. It was essentially a staff with a stake for each end.
Salax slung it over his back, underneath the crossbow and bowed.
"The brotherhood will see to it that you are...compensated" Salax made his way to the door.
"Use fire. They can sense heat"
Salax nodded and walked out.
The ride to the next town was rather uneventful. He rode on an expensive horse dressed in a leather trench coat and long brimmed hat.
Looking as he did, no one spoke to him. People thought he was a witch hunter.
HE reached the mansions easily enough. He circled the building several times. Only one cellar. Good. This would be easy.
As Salax approached the cellar doors he heard voices. He looked through a low wall on his left to see 2 guards approaching. He hid back against this wall.
As the guards followed the path Salax leaped out behind them. A swift kick to the back of the knees sent the left one tumbling. He grabbed the right one by the throat with one hand and covered his mouth with the other. A small blade erupted out of his gauntlet cutting through the man's throat and killing him instantly.
As the dead guard fell Salax drew the man's sword and brought it down on the other guard's head right as he rose.
Salax removed 2 large vials that were hanging at his waist. He knew there would be many vampires in the cellar.
He kicked the door open and threw both vials at the ground in the cellar. As he entered the door he drew both of the smaller crossbows. Aiming one at each side, he fired, hitting vampire after vampire. They lit up the room as the caught on fire and turned to ashes. After 4 shots from each cross bow he threw them aside. No time to reload.
He drew the crossbow from his back and continued shooting. Most shots connected, a few missed. Soulless vampires are invisible to his vision. He can see them, but only in black and white.
With the crossbow empty, he drew a match and threw it to the ground.
The liquid from his vials instantly caught on fire. He could see five more vampires.
He drew his stake staff, released the stakes and leaped between the flames killing the disoriented vampires. With his last leap he bumped into something.
He stepped back and looked up in disbelief.
A vampire. Or at least it was at one stage. The monster had winged arms, a long tail and a drooling slightly humanoid face.
Salax wasted no time striking it with his staff. The stake merely snapped.
Salax stepped back but was too slow, the creature struck out and sent Salax sailing across the cellar. Salax hit the wall hard but recovered quickly
He stretched, drew both forearm blades and both wrist blades out before the beast pounced.
Salax phased and turned 180 degrees and phased back in. He stood behind the creature as it stumbled from the impact against the wall.
He sliced across both its ankles. Ashes "bled" from the wound. It turned, and swiped at him with its clawed wing but Salax was faster.
He ducked and struck it with his wrist blade to the chest. The blade snapped on the monster's think hide.
"You're joking!" screamed Salax as the monster struck downwards blow.
Salax side stepped this and grabbed the beast's wing with his right hand. It screamed and took to the air. The cellar was only small and creature hit the roof trying to shake Salax.
Salax drew his left forearm blade across its wing. He sliced through the thin fibres and they crashed into a post supporting the ceiling.
Salax landed on his feet, the monster landed similarly.
It struck Salax across the chest. The impact knocked Salax back.
Salax retracted his one remaining wrist blade. As the monster took another swing he struck it with a left hook. TO the monster's surprise this sent it into another post. Before it knew it Salax was behind it, both of his hip daggers drawn.
He decapitated it.
Salax stumbled towards the exit only to find another vampire blocking his way.
This one seemed more sophisticated. He was dressed formally, 8 guards ran in through the only entrance (and exit) to the cellar.
"I see you killed my brother" said the count as he raised a pistol. The eight guards followed suit with their rifles.
"I did. And now I will kill you."
He couldn't predict the vampire’s actions, but he could predict how the guards would act.
"Haha. How? All you have are those 2 blades of yours and your fancy dance moves. We have guns!"
"No, what you have are bullets, and the hope that when your guns are empty I'm no longer standing, because if I am you'll all be dead before you've reloaded."
"That's impossible. Kill him"
The count and his guard opened fire. Salax phased the wounds from the counts pistol. He could not predict his shooting. He however phased all the guards’ bullets successfully.
Salax had in the process fallen to his knees and dropped his blades.
With blood dripping from his mouth he picked up his blades and smiled at the count.
Salax pounced. The first man was falling the ground, his jugular cut as he stabbed the man next to him.
Salax moved like lightning, cutting down 2 more men.
Both guards on either side of the count had reloaded. As Salax dashed to another guard he threw his 2 knifes, killing both guards who had reloaded.
Another fell as Salax tackled him, drew his forearm blades and decapitated him.
The count reloaded right as Salax strangled the last man with his left hand
"Die, die! Why won't you die!" screamed the count as he fired the approaching Salax.
Salax drew a stake from his right boot as he grabbed the count by the throat with his left hand.
"You count are dead. You have no pulse. You are kept alive by magic!"
"I however, am much more. I am both dead and alive. I move freely between both planes."
With that Salax drove the stake through the count's heart.
The vampire turned to ashes.
Salax brushed himself off. He could barely walk. Keeping that many wounds phased out took an effort. He would need a few days rest at the local inn before attempting to travel.
That one was an effort to write!
I feel like shooting myself for saying this, but logically you can't be a half man, half dark elf, half ghost, that's three halves which would mean you'd have to end up being one and a half people (somehow). Unless you mean a half human and half dark elf who is also half ghost on an entirely different scale, which works but probably needs to be clearer as it all just sounds a bit manbearpig right now.
What you're talking about is half dark elf, half human ghost. Two halves makes a whole person.
That aside the stories are good and dramatic and well written, but the character is a bit too awesome and special, especially with the wierd 'last of a dying race' lineage thing. Seriously, making a character who is incredibly powerful with a range of completely exotic abilities which are wheeled out whenever required might be a staple in anime and bad comic books, but it doesn't make for good narratives. It means there's no threat unless someone brings in the kryptonite-equivallent.
Just my opinion though.
I understand what you mean. Difficult to write about a character in any other way, especially when he's the only character. Compared to some of the things you read in the WoC/LM/DE army books he's really a no one.
It's hard not to get too excited about your own character. Especially when your last VERY detailed character died in the first round of the AoD.
Oh and he's not the last, he's the first
I think Salax needs a friend. anyone care to make one for me? Can be your next AoD character if you want, not fussed. Just send me a 260- point character, maybe some background?
Cheers for the feedback T.G.M. I understand what you're saying, it's just hard to stay within the lines
Maybe the first chapters could be building up the idea of Salax being powerful, and the assassins group, but then Salax is sent on a mission to assassinate a powerful noble, fails (bestted, and the whole of the assassin group falls apart. Then hes exiled into the North, and becomes wanted. Many assassins are killed by the forces of the Empire, and Salax and the remaining few have to brave the North, battling chaos and ogres. You could then end it with him and the few remaining assassins returning with a united force of dark elf raiders, and destroying the force of the count that drove him out. It could end with Salax killing the noble with skills learnt from the years spent in the North.
But thats just one idea, and if your looking for just a character as a friend, I'd say he either befriend an assassination target, or possibly a "trainee" warrior priest, who befriends him while the other priests despise and hunt him.
really like the writing, it inspired me to start writing my own series!
Hope I've helped,
