This is my first time making a tabletop army, so I figured I would make it interesting. Let me know what you think! My dwarfs are going to be unusal as far as dwarfs go. They aren't going to live under a mountain or anything like that. Instead, they are going to live in a giant floating city (kept afloat by runes), in the middle of the ocean. They will spend their days diving deep into the ocean, in dwarven submarines, to mine the precious ore at the bottom of the ocean. The only time they would come back to shore is to trade with other dwarfs for supplies and engage in battle with other races for fun and junk. It's not much, but that's all I have come up with so far. Let me know if it is too out there. If there is anything I can do to make it make more sense, but keep the overall theme, let me know. Thanks for looking.
Makes perfect sense. I actually like it!
It would have to be a fairly small "city" though, since they'd be afloat in waters commonly traveled by Elves of both major varieties. However, I think it would make an awesome theme. Any conversions in mind for the army?
Hmm, maybe to avoid the elves the city would be able to submerge completely under the water? I kind of like that idea. As far as conversions go, I am not too sure yet what I am going to do. For their banners and shields I was thinking of doing some sort of aquatic theme (fish/octopi/whales/etc). Their helmets could be shaped like sharks or something? Like I said I'm not too sure yet on the conversions. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to share them!
Why not choose Barak Varr?
And I'd like to see the puny elven ship that can get close to a dwarfmade city, without being shredded by cannon fire yet.
Anything short of black arcs anyway... lame-ass Druchii.. have to cheat with their elfish magic do they?
The only hole in logic I can spot is that Dwarfs hate the sea.. and boats.. and elves... and elves on boats especially.
Forgive me for my ignorance, but what is Barak Varr?
It's a city which is listed on the 6th edition maps, and was mentioned as being a Dwarf stronghold in the 'Gortek and Felix' books. The WHFB maps look very similar to maps of our real world. Barak Varr is located roughly where Venice would be, assuming "Tilea" is "Italy".
It is supposedly the major seaport of the dwarves.
Basing them in Barak Varr would work, but I really prefer your idea. The Elves of course sail the 'Atlantic' or "The Great Ocean". You could still base your army in other seas of the world (the main 7 still exist in WHFB, but under new names) to avoid them, or locate them a bit south of the common trade routes (somewhere off the coast of Lustria would work), or just go with the idea that it's a floating citadel, and that perhaps it has done well to give the elves a bloody nose and keep them away.
I'm eventually going to reopen my Fluffshop, once my arena is finished. I sort of wish I could offer to field this request right now, but I have too many other people in the cue, and it would be wrong to skip them out.
Barak Varr sounds like it would work, but I think I am going to stick with my original concept. That sounds like the type of place they would trade with though. I like the idea though that the fortress/city is so formidable that elves and other races just avoid it all together. Yep...
I had an idea for a general. He is a very eccentric dwarf, that simply goes by the name "Fishbeard" (too silly?). He has always been afraid of the dark (wierd for a dwarf, I know) and obsessed with treasure. So it was a pretty natural move for him from the dusty, dark caverns of the dwarves to the sunny, treasure rich ocean. Although he is a goofy dwarf, especially when intoxicated, he is a terror on the battlefield. And that is all I have really come up with for him so far...
The fact that there is so much treasure on the bottom of the ocean, shipwrecks and natural ore, the citizens of this city have an over abundance of gold and other precious stones. Due to this over abundance, the armor and weapons of those who go to war are typically made of gold and stuff like that... I will think of more later!
Oh, and what's a Fluffshop?
It was a thread that I had running for a while where you could post ideas like this, and I'd go through and write some fluff to support it. Name characters, create a history, pin down locations and dates within the cannononical fluff, create open possibilities for conversions, and anything else you asked me to. Right now, I'm working on an Arena of Death and haven't had time to do any writing for the shop, so I put it on an official hiatus. It should reopen eventually.
Groovy! When you finally open it again, I would appreciate being put on the list of applicants!
