So here it is, I could not sleep last night and I suddenly thought of something: Wood Elves are protecting their forest with all their might. It is sacred and none shall defy it. All who enter will be greeted by a hail of arrows..... (few exceptions there offcourse, the rest is shish kebab)
And here comes the bit I find a bit strange: Arrows are made of wood. In a medium Battle they will shoot over 300 if not more. Where do these arrows come from? I can follow the path that a spellweaver sings them from the trees or something but eventually the trees will run out and I can imagine that a treeman is not so pleased when he has no branches let. The forest, although magical, cannot grow that fast and especially not in the winter months when it is dormant.
So to cap it all: Do the Wood Elves protect their forest by shooting it bit by bit to the enemy?
Well, you can see my conundrum. To be fair I'm a Woodelf player my self. so it is not out of spite
You know that spell that wood elves get, the one how we can spawn a small forest?
Yea, that should usually do the trick.
Not to mention not many **** with the forst anymore aside from silly beastmen.
Well I do know they can magic a forest there but I still don't see a woodelf after spawning a forest ruthlessy cut it down for arrows.... It's a bit against their nature. If they were Dark elves OK those basterds are capable of anything...
True, I also thought about that but I'm not sure if dead wood is suitable for straight arrows (pun intended) and where do they get enough for a freaking army. The only place were thet can get enough is when the forest is partly destroyed after a lost battle and that will be a little to late in my opinion.
Good question. Allow me to answer. This is all conjecture of course but this is how I see it.
Wood Elves will expect to win every campaign/battle they fight, and indeed in the background the woodelves have so far been pretty sucessful at defending their homeland. This isn't me bigging up the woodelves per say merely pointing out that while the forces of Chaos Dark Elves etc seek to 'Take Over The World' the wood elves simply want to keep outsiders from their homeland. This is an easier objective.
So on the assumption that in the long term the Wood Elves have won every campaign fought in Athel Loren we can also assume that they have access to the battlefields.
And thus we come to a concept appropriate for wood elves. Recycling. An average elf (High and Wood) arrow will be very well made. I would say that they would be better than any arrow made by a human and although probably too stubborn to admit it they could teach the dwarfs a thing or two about wood work. In the case of woodelves this is combined with the fact that they can magically strengthen the arrow shafts (make the wood denser etc) therefore a good proportion of the arrows won't break. After the battle it is a simple matter to recover the arrows.
In terms of making the arrows I would imagine that there are some groves of trees that have been magically cultivated to produce branches that form like great bushels of arrows that are simply pruned off (if you want to add a darker twist they probably use their enemies as compost)
As to where the woodelves get the metal to form the arrow heads....well that is a different question. Maybe the arrow heads are also wood?

The wood arrow heads are possible. I actually think it was mentioned in an old WE Book.
Maybe they cultivate plantations on a sustainable and rotational basis... Like my toilet paper...
