In my usual habbit of never being able to select a project and just throwing out hundreds and hundreds of ideas.
I was thinking of maybe getting a fantasy army. I love the models and background for 40k, but Fantasy just seems like a better game, and I have friends who only play fantasy who it would be nice to be able to game with.
Now, I had a little fluff idea, but since I don't know any of the lists or much of the background, I could use a little help fleshing it out. I'd like to do an army based loosely on the Teutonic order, but with a suitably dark twist.
The Teutonic Knights were a knightly order in medieval Europe, they led crusades against pagan slavs, and conquered their own kingdoms. Over time, they became increasingly materialistic and callous (they felt it was okay to enslave non Christians unless they converted, so after a while they stopped preaching and converting those they conquered so they'd always have a good pool of forced labour.)
Of course, I don't just want to recreate the Teutonic order in Warhammer. If nothing else, the names and Christian symbolism needs to change (though I like the colour scheme.) Also, because I like dark and twisted themes to my armies, I'd like to take this slightly bloody history a step further, and have an army of once loyal Empire Knights which has fallen foul of something particularly dark and sinister. I think the real choices are:
Vampire Counts, using black nights to reflect the cursed, undead ritterbruder, and perhaps a few generic undead units to represent serfs, squires or vassals. Maybe the leader of the order was cursed with vampirism, or one of its priests or leaders turned to necromancy? My main problem here is that I just don't like the current Fantasy interpretation of vampires.. The whole bloodlines thing seems a bit stereotypical and limiting in terms of character behaviour and so forth. What I like about this army is the potential for imagery.. Tattered, long dead knights bearing the weight of an ancient curse or some such thing, what's not cool about that?
Chaos, using chaos knights for the knights, and perhaps some daemons and so forth to reflect their foul practices and summonings. The reasons why they might have turned to chaos are quite varied. My main problem here is that chaos knights don't seem very 'knightly' in the medieval since they don't use lances. They're more like generic heavy cavalry. I like this idea because I like chaos, plus it's just a really wierd and cool idea.. You can imagine them all hanging out in some big dark chapter house somewhere worshipping the dark gods and going slowly insane.
Or I could just use Empire rules and have the teutonic order as they most likely were. Greedy, bloodthirsty and unpleasant, but still holy warriors deep down.
I know you guys can't really tell me what to play, but which one makes the most fluff sense to you? I won't ask about gaming sense, because this is a fluff forum, but you have any points there as well, please PM me about as I'd be interested in hearing your opinions about the workings and playability of a mostly heavy-cavalry army.

Well most of the Empire knights are in Knightly Orders similar to the Tutonic knights so that seems like the obvious choice.
sins ive never heard of the teutonic knights i do not know what they look like.
i could imagine that Bretonnia would do the job well. they are really knightish  . they are really holy aswell  .
It should be restated that I wasn't just thinking of 'the teutonic knights in Warhammer,' I was thinking of using the theme, colour scheme and ideas of the real life teutonic order and making them into something altogether more fantasy-ish.
Therefore, there's no need to pick whatever is closest to real life. It's whatever sounds coolest.
i would say go with the vampire counts because you can just use knightly oreder sets with zombie / skelie sprue to create knights and as for the vampire i would go with blood dragons and make a dragon out of scratch
I still thinkEmpire would look and 'feel' the best. I think maybe Vampire counts would be too dark.
i agree.... not vampire counts...Originally Posted by Berny Macbrets are the coolest...Originally Posted by The_Giant_Mantis
ya but in vampire counts you get kick @$$ vampires
no, because IMO vampires suck.... (dont take it personally) ..... brets RULE!
Personally i think its too easy to make a VC 'empire' army, seen it done lots of times! i like your idea of a Chaos army.
In fluff terms they could be a knightly order of the empire who were involved in the original great war against chaos, fighting in Kislev against the forces of chaos at the time of the siege of Praag. They could have been cut off from the main empire forces and led deeper into the realms of chaos where they were eventually corrupted, since that time they have been slaves to the gods of chaos- occassionally reappearing in Kislev to attack cities and Kislevite and empire armies (as the Kislevites are the nearest the warhammer world has to Slavic humans this would be quite apt too)
You could easily convert empire knightly order models to represent them (but make them suitably chaotic but with a remnant of their original heraldry etc)
I think it could be cool, and makes perfect fluff sense to me anyway!
